Attrition?

Someone asked this question in the forum and I’d like to bring it out here for discussion.

For those of you who know how many people were in your original DTC/LID group, how many are left?

Just by doing a very rough estimate of what’s been posted in the forum I’d guess that we have an average of about 10% or maybe 15% who have either switched to SN or gotten pregnant or switched countries and are no longer in their group.

The question here is not whether someone is going to adopt from another country while waiting for China, but whether people have gone with another option that pulled them out of your group.

Information needed - your LID date, how many started out and how many are left. If you would prefer to email me the information that is fine, too.

I’m thinking this will be one of those question to ask every four months and see if the numbers are increasing.

I can’t speak for my whole DTC group, but I can tell what I’ve done. While I haven’t pulled my China dossier (and thus really am not “attrition”), I have started to pursue an adoption from Vietnam, which we hope to complete before our China adoption. We may have to put our China dossier on hold for several months in order to space the kids one year apart (required by my agencies and social worker). However, if the pace continues at 2-3 months for one month of DTCs, we won’t have to place our dossier on hold. We wanted two kids anyway, so this works for us. Hope this helps.

  2. chigirl Says:

My small agency originally had 12 families in our DTC group. We now have 11, since one family adopted domestically last spring.

  3. SuzyQ Says:

Question-slightly off topic-if you have to put your China dossier on hold, say for another adoption as spiritualknitter, or preganancy, do you have to start completely over with a new LID? In other words, do you have to go to the back of the line? DH and I are considering, putting in a dossier for a 2nd country.

    Any info would be great.

  4. RumorQueen Says:

I believe that when you get put back into line you usually get a referral in about two or maybe three months. But, if you’ve been out of line for very long then you are sometimes asked to have new medical forms and employment letters done and then you must be reviewed again first and it can take a lot longer.

Also, there is a limit to how long you can be pulled out of line and keep your place. I’m not sure what the limit is, this is one of those things you should talk to your agency about.

  5. frankieandsuzie Says:

I think the real attrition will come with the people who have recently logged in. Unless of course , it all speeds up. But, none of us started our paprework thinking it would be a three year wait. I wonder: at what point will people “abandon ship”? DH says on his 45th birthday. (unless of course we are really really close.)

  6. PJ Mama Says:

We might also ask if there are fewer dossiers going IN each month, as the wait scares away prospective parents. Would your polls measure that or will people just not know about this site early in the wait?

    LID 10/26
and planning on looking at the waiting kids this month. My poor daughter is 5.5 and has been waiting since she was 4 - her whole life pretty much that she can remember. She even asked why I didn’t request twins when I adopted her, as it would have been a better way to get two kids!

  7. RumorQueen Says:

People who started paperchasing six months ago did not know that the slowdown looked to be permanent. Six months ago we were still thinking this was temporary and that they would go back to whole months soon.

So, I don’t believe that the LID numbers are down that much yet.

However, people who are looking to get started right now do seem to be shying away from China, so it will start happening at some point, I think.

  8. Katri Says:

This is of course by our agency’s DTC groups not yahoo groups right? So we need to identify somehow annonamously (sp?) which one we’re from?

  9. RumorQueen Says:

Yes, your particular group from your agency. Don’t name the agency - just your LID and how many started and how many are left. If you want to email it that’s fine, too.

  10. still_a_waitin Says:

I am August 05 LID. There have been many people who decided over this past year to go special needs and most are home now with their babies. I don’t have an exat count but I would say about 10 to 15 families decided to go that route.

There are also a few others that I know who decided to go other routes and dropped from the list. There is one family from my agency group that decided to no longer persue the adoption route. I have no other agency stats.

  11. SuzyQ Says:

    Thanks RQ for the info.

I’m working on getting numbers for my medium agency, Nov. LID’s.

  12. misformom Says:

Hi - faithful follower, first-time poster here.

Our agency’s August forum has 16 families, and one has gone SN route. Rest still waiting.

  13. crickety Says:

My mother & were wondering, What actually happens to the paperwork? Is it physically returned?

Our agency batches travel groups only after referrals are issued, but I have anecdotally run into folks in town (one specifically LID October) who pulled their dossier with no plan for country change — and that’s what sparked our interest.

Also, someone mentioned that CCAA is not thrilled with agencies who have high rates of pull-out — does anyone have any insight on what CCAA *does* think about the dossiers pulled out? (Does an employee physically have to go find the paperwork? is what I guess I’m asking).

  14. SuzyQ Says:

    RQ~
Started out with 28, at least 6 have gone SN. Nov. LID group-medium size.

  15. zoesmama Says:

RQ — I think we started out with about 19 or 20 and we now have 17 in our group. A few went with SN adoptions and are home now.

  16. Morgaine Says:

    First time poster here…

We haven’t even started the process yet since we aren’t yet old enough, and won’t be for another six months or longer. We still plan on going with China, just know our wait times will be a lot longer. We had planned on waiting an extra year after we turned thirty because my DH wouldn’t be able to travel in 2008 because of his work, but now, we are starting it right away, and if he won’t be able to travel to pick up our daughter because somehow the wait times sped up a LOT, well that will be fine (especially if it means you guys get your kids faster!!) and we will deal with it when it comes.

Hopefully by starting right away, our time frame doesn’t get LONGER then the original plan we had to bring our daughter home in early 2009, but it may and I guess I will deal with it.

My husband is very sweet and said something like “Just because the wait time is getting longer doesn’t mean that our daughter is somewhere else!” He wants to stick with China because we both feel that our child is there (boy or girl). The wait time MAY effect if we go through with a second adoption or not.

  17. Ellieskyesmommy Says:

We are only a LID of 6/2006 and are now looking at SN. I have been informed that my agency is expecting a few SN children this month so keep in touch. We were offered a deaf infant from China post SARS but when China began doubling months (what a wonderfully wild ride) we got our referral in just 5 months. As for this go around, we are looking at SN and if a child catches our eye we would consider it. Ellie is 3.5 now and if we have to wait three years for an infant I do not think it would suit Ellie well.

  18. j4m4w Says:

How does one typically go about getting information on their “group”? Is this something that most agencies make available in the normal course of things? We are LID 6/28/2006, but I don’t know anything about other families that are at the same point in the process as us.

  19. pandaexpress Says:

Our large, China only agency doesn’t divulge how many families have a particular LID. I have no idea how many people using my agency have the same LID as I do. 08-30-05

  20. PJ Mama Says:

Three in our group. All still waiting.

  21. cungar Says:

Our LID is 8/18/05 and our original group was 13 and is now 10. My agency said these were all SN.

  22. zentee Says:

My agency never gives out info like that. They say it’s all about privacy, etc. Curious that other agencies give their clients this info.

  23. cindy in AL Says:

We were a 10/27 LID and switched to SN the first week in May. I got our daughter on July 24th and we have been home since Aug 2nd. I might add she was just shy of 26 months when I got her. The whole family mom, dad and 3 big brothers are madly in love with her.

I don’t know about our agency NSN switch to SN but my Yahoo group has had at least 15 people switch from NSN to SN.

  24. fortheloveof...china Says:

Our agency reported on 9/1 that they just received applications from 15 new families for China. Of course, our agency is STILL sticking with 12-16 months from LID to referral. When we started the process in May ‘06, we were told 9-12 months LID to referral…

  25. thirdtimearound Says:

    DTC 1/27 LID 3/3

My agency medium to large multi country will not tell us how many people are DTC OR LID with us. I am part of a blog group that is only for people who use this agency and have the same DTC as me. We started out with 11 people DTC 1/27 and are now down to 6. Two people were matched with beautiful sn daughters. Another person choose to no longer adopt and finally the forth person switched to a different country. I am surprised how small our group is becoming.

  26. gardenmom Says:

Out of our travel group of 14 logged in DTC Feb and LID March 2006, four have adopted special needs and are now home and 3 others are looking at the special needs program and hoping to find a match on our agencies next list- so half of our group!

Also the agency has been getting lists more frequently - many of the kids are with repaired needs and each list now has more competition and the first choice goes to families already DTC…So 30 kids have been placed to families already DTC since March of this year. The LID dates were from June of 2005 to March 2006.

  27. flowerpower Says:

My agency (small) is still sending as many dossiers as ever. When I asked them how come, they just responded that other countries take just as long (16-18 months is the current prediction).
When the wait was 6 months none of the SN children on their list got parents. Now all of them “disappear” very quickly to families already DTC.

  28. Number2 Says:

Hello everyone! I have been watching this site for a while but have never posted. My LID is 4/17/06 and the group size started out at 15 and is now 13 due to SN adoptions in my Midsize Agency.

  29. bdfitz53tochina Says:

How exactly would we get this information? We started with about 34 families, and I have no idea if we’re all still in it. I’ve only been able to connect with about 13 or 14 of them through the Yahoo Groups.

  30. themfour Says:

Our DTC is Nov 14 and LID is Nov 23 and as far as I know all 12 original families are still in our group. However, that might change. Since we’ve been waiting for so long my husband and I decided that we had time to register with the Children’s Aid Society while we wait. We are currently in the paper chase process, but since our home study has been done already, it’s much quicker (and cheaper!). Almost all expenses are covered by the government.

When we started the international adoption we wanted a child as young as possible, but now since our son is 4 and we’ve now experienced the joys of toddler-hood and little-boy-hood, we would also be thrilled with an older child (although not older than him). So, although it’s probably not likely, we might adopt a Canadian child if we’re chosen before our China referral.

I’m glad I haven’t yet painted the bedroom.

  31. Ellieskyesmommy Says:

My agency just sent out a long, long email regarding the long wait for China adoption. They cited an increase in applications, increased domestic adoption in China, and lightening of the 1 child law for the fewer children available situation. They explain that the longer wait times come in cycles and we are probably at the peak of one cycle and are potentially going to swing to the other side in the forseeable future. They wanted to clarify that rumor are just that and that their clients should only listen to them for fact. They do not want anyone relying on rumors. I am still checking this site 10,000 times a day for the wonderful information you offer. You keep me sane when I would otherwise not be.

  32. deigang Says:

Our DTC was 1/16/06 and our LID is 2/08/06. We are from a super small agency. As far as we know, we are going solo when traveling. The next couple are about a month behind us. RQ, is being from such a small agency a bad thing?
Thanks for all the great info.

  33. Aug9LID Says:

We are using a large agency. We joined a group for Aug and Sept 2005 LIDs. About 107 belong to our group. And, of those 107, 10 have switched to SN. This isn’t the most scientific analysis, though.

  34. windthrow Says:

Well our July 14 LID group started out as 11 and with us leaving the remaining 10 just got their referrals.

As for those that asked about how you would know this I find the different ways that agencies handle this issue quite interesting. Shortly after DTC our agency sends out a list of all the people in that group along with a phone number. Our group met as a whole 4 times between LID and now and there were several other smaller get togethers as well. Was interesting to hear that some may not be giving ut this info due to privacy concerns. It seems to me that the benefits of getting to know the group you will be travelling with far outweigh any downside.

When we changed plans that was one of the hardest parts, knowing we wouldnt be able to share such a wonderful experience with people we had come to know and like very much. Fortunately they have kept us as sort of honorary members of the group and shared their wonderful referral pictures with us.

  35. SuzyQ Says:

I’m with an agency that encourages you to join your yahoo chat group, based on LID. My November group has a database with members listed of those who have joined the chat group. (I’m sure there are still others with my agency that have a Nov. LID, that haven’t joined the chat group.) Anyway, I went down the list and checked off those who have gone SN. Not very scientific either, but it gives a rough sampling.

  36. ckessler Says:

I don’t know numbers but we were just DTD on August 18, 2006 and received our LID of September 4, 2006.

  37. Beth CF Says:

    Hi All

We had 11 in our group and one changed to a local adoption.
Our group meets regularly and we all have each others contact info. It is a great support network

  38. sethsmommy Says:

Not to get OT….I wanted to make a comment on what flowerpower’s agency said:

My agency (small) is still sending as many dossiers as ever. When I asked them how come, they just responded that other countries take just as long (16-18 months is the current prediction).

I have been following a few Vietnam blogs and one Taiwan blog. The process seems to go really fast. The Taiwan adoption took about 2months to get a referral and they have to wait 4-6 months or so to travel. Both countries seem to be taking about a year from START to finish.

We are entertaining switching but I am afraid that it is kind of like switching lanes. Once you do, the other speeds up..lol.

  39. PJ Mama Says:

    Deigang:
The benefits of a small agency, as I see it:

    1. Shorter turnaround for TA since they don’t have to collect from as many folks (ours are turned in the day of referral and sent back to China the next morning). Those who must fedex packages to different states and must do translations beforehand have a lag there.
    2. Smaller geographical dispersment of fellow travelers for get togethers (not applicable I guess if you are the only one your month). We meet at least twice a year with the other 8 families.
    3. Our agency generally travels to the same province. My daughter has many friends in our area who are from the same orphanage, which is very cool.
    4. I don’t believe our EXCELLENT facilitator (born and raised in China) has any less of a connection with CCAA than one from a larger agency.

Larger agencies may have more services: Travel prep videos, maps, newsletters. You may network with more families, but I find the local FCC is just as good. You will also have your online orphanage specific support group once you know where you are going!

Vietnam just opened IA back recently. There wait times are bound to go up — especially with the increased times for China. My twin sister had her paperwork to Vietnam just as they were opening back up — they already have their referral and will hopefully be home by the end of the year!! BUT, like I said, I’m sure their times will go up, just like Ethiopia did — although Ethiopia still seems to be fairly fast! ;) Someone correct me if I’m wrong! Hugs to all you late July LID’ers!! This should be our month!! ;) July 25 LID

  41. MaddysMom Says:

Our smaller multi-country agency will not give us the names of people our travel groups until DOR since they said ‘these can change between LID to Travel.’ They do have an agency specific Yahoo Group & acknowledege that many people figure out who’s in their group during the wait.

I know that my LID 11/23 group started with 5 families but I’m not sure where it sits.

  42. meg Says:

We are a LID of 3/29 and in April made our agency aware that we would consider a SN child. So I guess you can say we are in both lines ( our small agency list families, we are number 8 on the list) . As far as I know our LID group is still only 6. We could be matched with a SN child in Nov/Dec, or if things speed up (LOL) we could be matched with a NSN girl before our agencies next SN list comes out again.

  43. spiritualknitter Says:

Just to respond about putting your dossier on hold. My agency (China only) has told me that it will not put me at the back of the line, especially since I will have gone through the review room by the time we put it on hold. I will have to redo my home study (since I will have another child in the home by then) and obviously redo my I171-H, which I would have had to do anyway. I had some concern that the “new rules” might kick in for me if we go on hold, but my agency is of the opinion that they won’t, especially if we’ve already been reviewed. Also right now they’re thinking it may not even have to go on hold (perhaps a hint of longer than 18 month wait times?) They also told me it can go on hold for a few months, six months, or more.

If anyone has different information, I’d be interested.

Btw, we thought our Vietnam adoption would go quickly (6 months total) but have run into snags there too. (That’s a whole ‘nother story I won’t get into!). We had to find a Vietnam agency, and some weren’t willing to work with us, given our China adoption being started, though several were. We expect it to take about 8 months total, although it is true that people are RUSHING to Vietnam now, partially because it just reopened and partially because of China’s problems.

Our China agency was not resistant to our “switching,” but actually has been very encouraging (which means they won’t get our “business” for our second adoption, since they’re China-only.) They seem more interested in helping us become a family than getting our money. Given wait times, new rules, etc. it’s probably unlikely we would have been able to go to China for our second child anyway. I like to think of it as having our “second” child first! It may not be the solution for everyone, but it helps us have a family of four before I’m too much older.

  44. Addisonsmom2b Says:

Our LID is 3/24/06, we started with 11 families (we were given names and email addresses through our agency). Two of us have gone SN. One family is in China right now getting their son, and we are awaiting TA to go get our daughter.

  45. NinasMom Says:

Incredibly, our small agency had more dossiers sent to China in August than any other month since April!!! Like many of you, the agency is sticking to the “12-14 mo. referral timing.” Not sure at what point it turns into one big fat LIE!! Makes me so sad for those families who could be pursuing other options. I looked and there seems to be only a couple of people who have dropped, but I’m not sure the agency changes every group number on their site.

  46. momwannabe Says:

    Hi,
I am very interested in hearing more about staying in the china queue while starting the chase in another country in parallel. Someone wrote on the site that they were doing this and I was told by my agency that it wasn’t possible because the INS clearance can only be used for one country at a time.

Anyone have more info on this?

    TIA,
    M.

  47. wunone16 Says:

our agency, I still haven’t figured out if they are small, medium or large, sends out 10 dossiers a month to China. We have a LID of 12/7/05 and as of now we are a perfect 10 for 10 with nobody dropping out. Our agency sent us names and contact info for everyone and yes there is a Yahoo group but not much activity in in since the tremendous slowdown.

  48. SuzyQ Says:

    momwannabe
I was just told last week that you can defintely have IA dossiers submitted in 2 different countries at the same time. I wish I had found this out this past spring, I would definitely have done it.

At this point, not sure if it would be a wash, and have the posibilty of 2 referrals coming in around the same time. (Sure would be nice to be able to make an informed decision here on time frames!)

We had always planned to adopt a sister for DD#1, but DH is starting to feel “too old” to do it again with this doggone unpredictable wait. I would have moved on the 2nd dossier pronto last spring if I had info indicating further lengthening of wait times.

  49. momwannabe Says:

    Hi SuzyQ,
Thanks for the post. QQ- what is “IA”?

  50. khansen Says:

In my group with a small to medium agency, our LID group started with about 15 families and 2 have left to pursue the SN route.

  51. momto4hopefully Says:

Our LID is 5/11/06. We have 6 families in our group, the only batch for May of 06 from our agency. All are still in, to my knowledge, however we will drop out if our I 171 expires and we do not have a referral fairly close. Our I 171 doesn’t expire until Oct. of 07 so it would put us at exactly 17 months. If at that time, it looks to be more than a few months away, we will not renew. Hopefully by then we will have some kind of idea where this is all going.

  52. Tresordasie Says:

    IA stands for International Adoption.

  53. laps Says:

My LID is September 12, 2005 in China. There are 5 families in my group and we are all still waiting. I never dreamed the adoption process would take this long…in November, it will be 2 years that I started the process.

  54. zoesmama Says:

Our US agency does not allow us to apply for any other country while in the China program. And, we have to wait 1 year between adoptions. I guess its an Agency thing — although my agency said that China does not want people to have dossiers in other countries while you are logged in with them. Who knows?? I swear, this stuff is crazy.

  55. snickerdoodle Says:

My small agency sent 11 dossiers to China last Oct 17th for an Oct 31st LID. Only one has gone SN and the rest are waiting.

  56. CWS Says:

My log-in group is the same as SuzyQ’s. Looks to me as though the comments here support the 10-15% attrition rate shown in the forum discussion.

  57. wearewaiting Says:

We are with a small multi country agency that will not tell us anything about who is logged in! So, I have no idea who is even in the same month as we are (Dec). They have a yahoo group for the agency but it is not real active. I know in the Dec DCT group there has been maybe four that have gone SN.

  58. hikinglorax Says:

I don’t have the formal data from the agency (small-med. multi country) but there were originally 6 of us in the Nov. agency yahoo group, only 4 seem active now. Also the agency has their own board that some people are on and there are 4 Nov LIDs listed on the board’s “where are you in the process” list.

  59. NovLID Says:

We started out with 10 in our LID group and 1 that I know of is already home with their SN daughter. Our paperwork goes to committee this month to see if we are chosen to adopt a SN little girl. (fingers crossed!)

  60. grover Says:

LID 12/5. 4 in our group. All still going!

  61. waitbabywait Says:

My understanding is that some Vietnam adoptions are going faster than others, because the program is just re-opening (I have been looking into it, but not for now, instead for a “mei mei” [will have to learn some Vietnamese then too!])) and I think I also read that there is not one central “clearing house” like China’s CCAA, which tends to make the processing vary, but that second part’s just what I remember & my memory could be wrong….
I am with a small multi-country agency. My agency sent in 6 referrals including ours for our month, and that is about as high as they get for their China program. I don’t know how many are NSN or SN, but I do know that their policy is once LID no switching from NSN to SN, so no one could have changed camps.
I have not heard of anyone leaving our group, and their enrollment seems to be about as usual, as it seems to be about 3-6 families DTC each month in the China program.
They did offer to start us in another country when I began to hear age rumors because they felt we could get another child while we are waiting for our China referral if we went to Ethiopia (this offer was made in April, and we were DTC in March; now I think I’d be cutting it too close by their estimate), but we did not take them up on it because we want our DTC March baby to be our first baby, as we are already talking to and about her, and frankly, we just ain’t got that kinda dough (two countries at the same time dough I mean….). I am 41, so it is possible I may be too old to apply for China for daughter #2 if the new rules come down as rumored, but we will cross that bridge, as they say, & with our little Sophie from China in tow. No matter who, where, or when she is, she’s exactly who we want and love :)
I dreamt about her last night. Her bio mom was giving her directly to me (she just had too many children and was too overworked and couldn’t feed them all she said), which was traumatic for my “Sophie” (she was about 2), and as she moved from her bio mom’s arms to mind I told her, “Don’t worry though; I’ll never let go of you, and I’ll never stop waiting for you.” She smiled just a little and her hair was all wavy and damp on the ends from the upset which had made her cry and sweat. It was such a sweet little dream, even though she had to go through being given up, and I squeezed her to me and she squeezed back with her tiny arms, and reached to touch my eye with one of her little fingers, and I carried her out of the room, and then, and then, …..

she needed her diaper changed like right that second! and I couldn’t find a clean bathroom or counter or anyplace to do it, and it turned into this tense dream of me frantically searching with her on my hip!
I think I’ll just stick with the first part of the dream.

Just to give you aan Australian perspective we are in a group of 6 couples all of who are definately still there with a LID of 03.03.06. In Australia though it is not possible to change countries mid stream, so once you are committed to country it would be very rare for a couple to drop out unless it was for personal reasons.
Australia has agreements with a limited number of countries and only a few of these are really open at present for us to pursue. Next year Korea is not accepting any more files for overseas adoption and I know a lot of couples here are looking at pursuing China instead.

  63. babyincite Says:

They’ll have to give us the boot! Otherwise, we are in it for the long haul knowing, as we did when we began, that no timeframes were guaranteed. LID 12/13/2005.

  64. faithsforevermom Says:

LID 11/16/05…we started with 9 families…one family accepted a SN…as far as I know there are 8 families left.

  65. 2docs4kids Says:

For those of you considering 2 countries, be careful juggling two prospective adoptions at once. You might want to check into the laws for your state. Our state requires a 6-month period between adoptions (6 months between when they are final). We just completed a domestic adoption (a surprise!), and we are a January LID for our China, but it definitely looks like the 6-month requirement won’t be a problem! LOL

As far as the topic for this thread, I have no idea of the statistics for our small agency. However, the SN program has become very popular and I do know that there are several families that have switched from NSN to SN.

I have just done something SURE to bring on referrals: I booked our tickets to fly from California to Connecticut for Christmas at my sisters.

I considered using United, so the fare would be transferable should we get headed to China instead, but it was a lot cheaper on American…

I guess the $800 if not used is still cheaper than a complete re-do on the I-171??

Our agency won’t tell us how many are in our LID group– I actually find this strange — But it has a yahoo group for each month of DTC’s. We were DTC in Jan 2006, LID 2/13. We had 12 in our group, 2 I know of have gone the SN route. There are some who aren’t on the yahoo group I’m sure, so probably the 10% attrition to SN is about right.

I know of about 60 families that were LID in October for my agency. Approximately 12 were on the 10th, which is my LID. Only one of those 12 that I know about have pursued SN and they have just gotten home about a week ago with their daughter. We are with a large mulit-country agency.

On the topic of doing two countries at once: I had to transfer my I-171H from China to Vietnam. I don’t know if that means China still “has” it or not. Either way, I have to redo my I-171H for China.

I don’t know what my state requires as far as spacing of adoptive children, but my home study agency wants them a year apart, my China agency wants them at least 6 months apart, my Vietnam agency wants them 6-12 months apart, and I want them a year apart! I assume such rules don’t apply to people adopting two at once (from the same country).

This is very unscientific, but these numbers show an attrition rate of 15.4 percent.

We’ll do this again in January and see how things look.

I hopped out of the process before I was Logged in. We never sent anything to China.

THANK GOD I WAS READING THIS BLOG before I sent my stuff to China!!!!!

We know already who we are adopting and can visit her before we get to pick her up!

We just started the process with a group of 21 from our agency with LID 9/5/06.
