Half the Sky update
Half the Sky has let us know that so far, $2,983.25 has been raised towards our total.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, we are trying to raise the money to pay for the salaries for the nannies at the center in Nanning, Guangxi. The cost for the salaries for 18 nannies for one year is $17,300.
If you aren’t familiar with Half the Sky, or with why we are doing this, please see this page with information about Half the Sky and why we are sending them money. This page is now linked in the top right under Site Navigation if you want to find your way back there. When I opened that email from Half the Sky and saw the total I (yeah, you know what’s coming) burst into tears. And now I’m trying to type through tears again. I’m speechless, and that doesn’t happen very often. Thank you. |

This is a beautiful thing!!! We have been contributing to Half the Sky on a regular basis. So here’s a very delicate question….how do I get people to donate to HTS instead of buying baby gifts for us? I don’t want anyone to feel that we are ungrateful for any gifts, but we’re financially ok and I would much rather funnel funds to a more worthy cause. Maybe we have a fundraiser party?? I don’t know…

BTW,
One of the best gifts my 93-year-old grandmother has received in this last year was donations in her name!

WOW! That is really amazing. It really goes to show what kind of difference can be made when people join together. I know that you are not here sifting through all of this information and helping all of us with this wait so that you can get a pat on the back. However, if through your site you are able to greatly affect the lives of the orphans in China, then I think you should grant yourself at least one pat for that!

More good news from Maria in Spain!!!!
Check out the latest post THIS morning in the forum. Tater has told a family that the referrals will NOT get to 15 months.
Okay, as an 8/30 who would be 15 months with the November referals…does this mean that POSSIBLY AOA will be included in this batch???? If so, TG and G, I am definitely buying you guys a beer at the WS!!!!
[Must breathe..must breathe.]

That is a WONDERFUL idea rather than a baby shower. As a mum with a 5 year old already I don’t need anything that I can’t buy myself. I will definately put that on my site and ask for people to give it to the RQ donation. We already sponsor a child through Half the Sky and RQ please don’t cry. Giving more money to HtSky in your name is the very least I can do for someone who is truly saving my sanity.

I remember a story from a while back of a child who decided she had enough toys and she wanted to raise money for HTS. She was older, maybe 7 or 8? Not sure. Anyway, she and her family rented some of those huge blowup things for the day and had family come to run various carnival type games and they invited kids from the neighborhood and her school. She said that she had the best birthday party ever, and they also managed to raise several thousand dollars for HTS. They had people give donations as they came to the party instead of bringing a gift, and then they wrote a check to HTS from the money that was given at the party.
I also know of people who have done this for a shower when they already have kids and don’t really need anything. They’ve asked people to write checks out to HTS instead of buying them a gift, and then they’ve sent all of the checks to HTS all at once.
So, if that’s what you want to do then I’m sure there is somewhere out there online that shows ideas for how to word the invitations. If I know of several people who have done it then there have to be a whole of people who have, and that means that someone has put up the wording on the invitations. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing? I have no idea how people survived without it.

RQ,
I love this blog. I have been here many times daily since you started on the old blog. You have kept me sane (well, maybe sane is not the right word - how about somewhat sane) in knowing there are others sharing this long bumpy ride. I like to be on top of the situation, something I quickly found I could not do when dealing with China. They pretty much run the show. In a way your site gives me some control over my situation - a place where I can learn about what MAY be going on. The unknown is so much more scarry. At least I feel like I can try and learn as much about the situation as possible, in turn feeling like I am at least educated about what I can not control. Yes, I know this is a rumor site, but we all work together to figure out which ones are true and which ones are a pile of hooey. On top of that the discusions and information sharing have helped form a nice community of people trying to survive this arduous wait. So yes, a donation to a wonderful organization like HTS is the very least I can do! Thanks again!

RQ~ What probably started out as a small group has grown into a real “community”
Just to see that you have helped us and brought us together and that we as a group can help yet more people is amazing. I guess its that pebble in the water thing…the ripple goes on and on. Thanks for tossing the pebble!
I am eager to see the funds grow. Will you please post updates on it monthly or something? Thanks!!!

I went to a birthday party recently and the mom asked for no gifts, but a donation to a children’s charity instead. Since I was already about to donate on behalf of my daughter (in celebration of her Gotcha Day), and your request came out the same week, I decided to combine all three donations and sponsor a child on behalf of my daughter, RQ, and my friend’s daughter. I received information about the child about 2 weeks ago. She is from the same SWI that my daughter is from (Beihai City) and is doing well in the Infant program. Now I just keep my fingers crossed that I receive a notice that she has been adopted - who knows maybe Monday or Tuesday someone will get a call saying they have been referred this beautiful girl!!
