My Life Disoriented

I’ve got this show taped, but haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. Has anyone else seen it? Want to offer your views on it?

For those that aren’t familiar with it, here is an article about it. The basic theme seems to be that the kids are used to being in an area with lots of Asians, and then they move to a school where it’s them and apparently two other Asians. It’s aimed at teens and how they fit in, but apparently is also covering some issues that adults have to deal with as well.

One of my biggest concerns is that the family business is a Massage Parlor. This article helps allay some of that concern, but not really all of it.

If you want to know when it will be airing near you, you can go here.

Also the producer/director?? Byler’s sister is a single mom of an adopted Chinese daughter residing in China. Interesting.

I thought it was interesting. As for the massage parlor, it was not the focus at all. There is one part where one of the daughters was standing outside the parlor and another teen assumes she works there because she is Asian. However, she realizes what she has done and apologizes. That little exchange made a good point.
It was also interesting how it shows one of the popular girls trying to make friends with her only because she is Asian.
It made many good points, often in a subtle way, in a short film.

RQ — At first I thought the title of this entry was personal! Glad to see it’s just a tv show!

Looks like it’s on here in columbus — at 3:00 a.m.!

Darn, I missed it; the Chicago PBS station aired it the night after Christmas and early this morning at 2:30AM. A lot of the other stations have it airing many times. trange that a major metropolitan area that has so many diverse cultures, including a very large Chinese community, would only be showing it 2 times Kathryn http://journeytoourchild.blogspot.com

They don’t even show it on PBS in the Seattle area, just Spokane which we can’t get here.

Haven’t seen the show, haven’t heard of it until now, but I don’t get why the family business is a massage parlor. It sounds like a cable tv pilot that bombed, so pbs got it on the cheap.

Why can’t the show better reflect reality?

I came across it while channel surfing a few nights ago. While it is nothing groundbreaking, it was an insightful yet sugarcoated (I teach high school…trust me on that one) look at high school life through the eyes of Asian American girls. If it gets made into a series, I definitely see it with more of a pre-teen audience. I especially loved the line from the goth Asian cousin who admitted he dressed like he did because he would rather get stares for being goth than for being Asian.
