A Project
I was doing some non-adoption-related research last month and ended up on a forum that had a lot of the information I was looking for. This forum had a “Hall of Fame” room that was a wealth of information. Threads that were considered very very good were moved into there, and stayed. It was a huge forum, bigger and older than ours, and there were about 25 threads in there. It was suggested that anyone new to the site read at least five of those threads from beginning to end before making their first post. Not sure I want to go that far, but I like the idea of the the room. I’m thinking this would work well for this site, as we’ve had some wonderful discussions that I think newbies would do well to read through.
I’m thinking this might be a good “project” to take on this month during the slow period. We will have a nomination period where people link to posts that they think should go into the room, and if we get too many of them we can then figure out how to narrow it down (by vote, or by decision of the mods, or, some other way). We might even need to have sub rooms in the big room - a room for attachment related threads, a room for sleep related threads, a room for baby-equipment related threads, etc. But, that’s if we have too many and can’t narrow some of them down, I think.
If you remember a thread that you’d like to nominate for the Hall of Fame, please look up the link to the beginning of the thread, and list that link along with the subject of the thread here in the comments. The only threads eligible will be threads from the public section of the site - so no threads in Let’s Talk or Blowing off Steam or any of the LID rooms are eligible. We do not move items from a private area of the site to a public area of the site, that would not be fair to the people who originally posted who trusted that they were in the private area.

I’ll do the first nomination as an example:

This is a good idea! Just wanted to say that I hope there will be separate rooms for attachment problems, sleep issues etc, that makes it much easier to find the threads.

Hi RQ, great idea.
Did you give any thought to putting this “Hall of Fame” in a private area so that all threads could be included? Since people need to join before they can post anyway, they would have access.
Alternatively maybe a separate hall of fame in the private areas maybe? Nominations could all be taken in the Let’s Talk area?
Just a suggestion, is still great idea as it stands now.

If people vaguely remember a thread they liked but are not sure of the best way to search, one thing to remember is you can sort the threads by any of the categories listed at the top of the page. For example if you click on replies it will sort the threads by increasing number of replies. If you click on it again it will do the same by decreasing number of replies. This is a quick way to find the threads that generated a lot of interest if nothing else.

Hi! I’ve been a lurker for a while now, but finally decided to join in. Since I’m still in the paperchasing stage, and most likely have about 4+ years of waiting ahead, could we have a room that is focused on learning more about China? I’m considering taking a Mandarin classes. I’m reading tons of fictional novels based in China or about Chinese people, like the Good Earth, the Joy Luck Club, or Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and loving it! It’s a fun way to learn more about the cultural differences. Oh, and what about movies, too? Like the King of Masks? We could set up a kinda bookclub/movies/lessons etc discussion. Sound like fun?

Ooops and the title of that one was
“Realistic descriptions of your first few days with baby”

I realize this may have been considered already…but just in case it hasn’t….. why not a space in the private area for nominated topics? Just a thought.
I think its a great idea! On one weight loss site I used to frequent there was a room with read-only posts from other members (copied and moved by mods, I think) that were especially helpful, motivational, etc.

But seriously now, I think this is a great idea!

Here’s my nomination: Solving the Question: What Does My Child’s Name Mean?

I’d love to re-read it when I get closer to or get a referral!

Great idea, but not sure about calling it Hall of Fame?? Newbies may not know what it contains & may not navigate through all RQ has on offer to gain from it’s content. Could we get people to suggest alternative names like “Reference Centre’ or ‘ A-Z of IA, ‘Hot Topics”, “Everything you always wanted to know…” etc ? .
I’d include a thread where people are voicing their insecurities about things like their age when baby comes, will they be a good 1st time parent etc & see what the responses are as many have these feelings but don’t voice them.
‘Hall of Fame’ sounds like it should be full of the gorgeous monthly referral pics.
Just a thought , I’m in marketing

That sounds great! It’ll get me to stop whining about the waiting time… A book/film club would be really interesting. I’ve started reading a lot and have some great books to suggest and would love to read some more.
Another idea for this could be: how will you raise a child from another culture and/or how do you incorporate your child’s culture/background into your daily life.

I would like to vote for the cussing room also!!!!

Book Threads about China or set in China. Great for the long wait. I have read a lot about China culture and I am saving the child care stuff until I get closer. It was a downer for me to try to read that stuff too early.
Here is one of a several good posts on books. Someone mentioned a long wait and wanting to learn. There are many good books mentioned. I have learned so much from them and find them fascinating. By the way, I loved River Town.

I think that sorting though all the Travel Tips and putting those into different sections like packing, airline, restraunts, hotels etc. would be very helpful.

Okay I want to just draw this back to the original idea. It wasn’t to create a second project of redoing all the room which would be a good amount of work for RQ, but it was to nominate your favorite threads. Remember also that RQ does all of this in her free time and I would guess it would be a major pain in the rear to sort through all of the threads and move them into even more specific rooms. (or maybe the thought just seems tedious to me- ha ha)
Treechaser - see the forums under “Q&A” that is for the Chinese culture questions. Lots of stuff already in there.
And on that note, I nominate one of my own threads:
P-Mates for the WIN!

Hopefully I’ve copied the link correctly. The current 1st few days with baby is invaluable & gives us all hope that one day we will be there too. Each experience is different & may be of benefit to us when gotcha day finally comes.
