It may be Sunday night here, but it’s Monday morning in China and the CCAA will be back to work in a few hours.
I haven’t seen any new rumors come up over the weekend, hopefully it won’t be much longer before they start in earnest.

Bring on the Rumors they can’t come soon enough for me.
RQ - Are you hearing anything about the age of referrals going up (babies getting older). We’re in the middle of doing our HS update and our SW says we should broaden our age range. We’re not going to do it but the request has made us curious. Wondering if you’re hearing a lot of this.

This message is for Kathleen. I met your parents this weekend in New Orleans. We bonded over frustration with the wait talk. We figured out that you and I had very close log in dates. It would be great to chat some time. Maybe you could log in onto this site. I hope all is well with you. I totally could understand your frustration with all of this waiting. And I know your parents told you what we did. It has been so wonderful. Take Care, and tell your Mom and Dad hello.
All my best,
Theresa

momwannabe,
Did your SW tell you why s/he wanted you to expand the age range in your home study? Ours asked to do the same thing and ishe said t was to prevent problems with immigration in case the baby was older than 12 months at the time we brought her home. We went ahead and did it, but did not change the age requested in our adoption petition.
I’m curious what others are hearing about this.

norasmommy,
That is what our SW said — that is was in case the baby was older at the time you leave china, but you can easily do an addendum for that. Not sure what you mean when you say you “did it but did not change the age requested in our adoption petition” Can you explain what is an adoption petition? Is that something that expires like a Home Study and needs to renewed?

Hi momwannabe,
I recently asked our agency (China-only) about this and got a surprising answer. Back when we began the process, I knew the parent age cutoff for an infant, but I couldn’t remember, so I was just asking (44? 45?). But the answer I got was “the CCAA doesn’t have age guidelines.” I asked if there had been a major change in CCAA policy, because I’d been told that there WERE age guidelines (i.e., if you are under a certain age, and your home study says 0-12mos., that you would receive a referral for a child at least very close to this age range — and this was part of what was predictable and appealing for us about China’s IA program). Our case worker said yes, there has been a change in CCAA policy. The CCAA no longer has age guidelines. She said families are generally seeing referrals for the age they requested, but not everyone is. She said if a couple gets a referral for a much older child (she defined this as more than 10 months older), the agency would be willing to advocate for another referral, but the couple would have to decline the first referral and risk not getting a second one. Essentially, a risk that would be outside of our comfort zone after waiting almost 3 years (not to mention how upsetting it would be to think about declining a referral, regardless of the reason)! She also said that the matching process has changed: Essentially, the age of the child you are referred is strictly based on the age of adoption-ready children on that person’s desk in the matching room the day you are to be matched.

Has anyone here adopted a much older child from China or other country with major culture and language differences? We’ve been giving some thought to really opening up our age range when we update our homestudy. Can anyone give us any input?

momwannabe,
What our placement agency calls an “adoption petition” is a personal statement, written by us, that is included in our dossier and describes us and the child we would like to be matched with.
My understanding was that the homestudy update is needed by the state and the CIS … I didn’t get the impression that it was going to China to be added to our dossier before matching. Of course, I could have misunderstood or misinterpreted.
Awww… my anti-spam word is mama.

Dear CTDAD (i am from ct too!) and Norasmommy-
Thanks for your responses!! Norasmommy even tho my agency - who doesn’t communicate well- will not admit to it, I think it is true that the updated HS does not go to the CCAA.
As for the age issue, I too was told that the older you are the older your baby might be but when I look at the babies post each month it seems quite random. It did seem like half of the babies posted last month were older than 1 year and one couple received a 2 yr old after requesting AYAP.
Just trying to figure out if there’s any method here - I think your info is probably right, CTDAD, when you say that it depends on what the “matcher” has available. Heres to hoping they just get matching soon!!
Thanks again everyone!
M.

momwannabe,
Our agency said the very the same. I really did not want to change the age of our child in our HS but they said we might run into issues.
