Still here, still taking care of a sick baby
I’ve looked through emails and such and don’t see any rumors that need reporting.
TT is still sick, and alternating Tylenol and Motrin isn’t enough to keep her fever down. The Tylenol lasts about two hours, the Motrin lasts about two and a half hours or sometimes three hours. The time in between has to be spent either rotating towels on her to keep her cool or playing in the tub with her or getting crushed ice or popsicles or sherbet into her. I can go to sleep when I give her medicine but have to wake up about two hours later to keep an eye on her fever. RK and I usually take turns taking off work and doing night time duties when one of them is sick, but he has known for a month that he’d be working long hours this week so I’m handling the brunt of taking care of TT this time around.
She’s such a little trooper though, as long as we can keep her fever down she will lay and cuddle with me and watch TV. It’s only when her fever gets up that she cries.
GlitterGirl hates to take medicine and it’s always a battle and lots of tears (and much drama) to get her to take it. When she was younger she’d even force herself to throw it back up sometimes, just to make a point. We finally came up with a combination of consequences and rewards that mostly stopped the throwing up part, but there is still much drama around it.
TwinkleToes just takes her medicine and then drinks her water. Doesn’t so much as bat an eye about it. She’ll even ask for it when her fever gets high (but you have to know that meh-sih means medicine in TT talk).
We are surviving and have things down to a bit of a routine. I’ll keep an eye on things every couple of hours to see if there are rumors to report, but I need a good night’s sleep before I even attempt an analysis. My brain isn’t exactly in math mode right now.

The poor little thing. I remember how awful the high fevers were. Hopefully it will soon be passed.
Get some rest, Mommy.

Hope she turns the corner today and starts to feel better!

Sounds like flu. Both daughters and dh had it–only I was spared (only I had a flu shot too). The girls had very, very high fevers and we also had to stay on a strict schedule of motrin and tylenol. We ended up in the ER at one point and they gave us a different dosing handout than is on the packages–it says to give a higher dose of motrin if the fever is above a certain point (103 maybe?). Anyway, after 6 days everybody bounced right back. Hard to believe, but true. Hang in there! It will pass.

RQ, try to get some rest yourself too. Hope your baby girl’s feeling much better very soon! xx

Hi RQ,
I hope that TT starts to feel better very soon. I love her requests for meh-sih–very sweet. I know that you are giving TT the very best care, and hope that you are able to get some rest for yourself today also.
Best Wishes,
CChips

You can give larger doses of Motrin if the fever is over 102. Check out this link for details. http://www.healthcaresouth.com/pages/tylenolmotrin.htm For new moms - You can give Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin every 6, so when you are rotating them, give one every 3 hours, that way you aren’t giving the Motrin again too soon.

Thinking about you both and hoping TT gets well soon. We had our share of the bigtime blahs just a few weeks back and it was ugly for a few days. Amazing, though, how kids bounce back.
Bring on the warm weather, Mother Nature, so our kids can be healthier- we are overdue here in N KS.

Goodness you all are certainly going through a lot. Hope TT feels better soon and that everyone in the family gets some rest.

I’m sorry to hear TT is still under the weather. Sounds like she’ in good hand. Take care, RQ. My thought are with you!

Get well soon, sweet girl!

Here is an idea for TT that you might not have heard before-don’t give her the whole dose of medicine at once; instead, give her half, then if she is to take meds again in, say four hours, give her the other half in two hours and keep doing that-a half dose at half time intervals. It will prevent her from coming down off the medicine and feeling miserable until it kicks in again. It will help both of you.

RQ–Hope TT gets better soon; my nieces and nephews were down with that bug a few weeks ago. (We’re in NY, not sure where you are….)
This is a bit off topic, but I’d like to know if anyone else is seriously thinking of withdrawing from CHina at this point. We have an LID of 3/20/07. I’m 43; not sure if I can go through this for another 3 years (and that’s minimum). I’d appreciate feedback. Thanks.

RQ, please; nevermind rumors. Put us aside so you can rest. That TT senses when her fever’s returning and feels awful enough to ask for meds brings me to tears. Poor peanut.

It’s so funny that you say meh-sih…….my dd is a little younger than yours, but seems to be struggling w/ speech in the same manner….that’s totally how mine says medicine too! Hope she feels better soon!!!

I am so sorry TT is still sick :-( Please don’t worry about the blog - you are needed elsewhere.
Hugs. I hope she feels better soon!

Our little one had the high fever for a week. We did the same thing that you are with alternating the meds. After 2 visits to the Doctor, diarreha as well she broke out in a rash and the next day she was better. At first I was think strep…my girlfriends little one had strep that became scarlet fever the week after mine. Yikes…we have not seen them in some time so I knew my kido was safe. Good luck, enjoy the snuggly time. I hated the hold me know, no matter what else you are doing moments (like getting me food, etc, just hold me…drama drama drama). I love the cuddly times.

RQ, don’t worry about rumors- just take care of TT and your family.
My youngest’s temp spiked to 103.8 last week and the Motrin only temporarily brought it down. It turned out she had an ear infection.
((Hugs))). Get well soon, Twinkle Toes.

RQ, hopefully you and TT are feeling better, sleeping, and you won’t see this……..But well wishes going your way none the less. Poor thing!!

Please never give your child medicine the way Ruby Hill suggests (sorry Ruby, not trying to offend you). Medications need to reach a certain “blood level” in order to work most effectively and giving a half-dose doesn’t allow that to happen. It is better to use the Motrin-Tylenol routine to avoid the peaks and valleys with symptoms.
One other thing you might want to keep at home is a box of Tylenol suppositories, in the pediatric dose. They are an over-the counter medication, but kept behind the pharmacy counter. Not a pleasant thought, having to give or receive a suppository, but there are times when a kid can’t or won’t keep down the Tylenol and these work quickly. Make sure you discuss using them and dosage with your pediatrician at your next visit.

Thanks, mumarlene. I’m also a master’s prepared advanced practice nurse. For those interested, the “Tylenol” suppositories are sold under the brand name “Feverall”.

RQ,
When time permits and your sweet DD’s are better could you address the issue that research China has brougt up. It seems to be striking fear into a lot of parents, me included, and we could sure use your help on this issue. All the discussions are in the forum.
Thanks!

We dealt with high fevers (104, 105 degrees), febrile seizures, etc., a lot until my little one turned about 3 years old. It was just how her body reacted to colds, sinus infections, etc. Now that she’s 6, she’s only had two high fevers (both brought on by the flu) in 3 years.
My one bit of advice - LET YOUR PEDIATRICIAN GUIDE YOU!! That was our rule - once a fever approached 104, the doctor took over (with instructions, etc.) Even now, I’ve called the doctor at his home on a Sunday morning (per his instructions). He went to medical school. I didn’t :)

I hope everyone is better soon! I read today that as of April 1(new Hague) everyone that has not completed their adoption must complete 10 hours of training through through their homestudy agency. You must obtain a certificate when completed. I read this on an agency site. In 2006, we had an adoption class for a couple of hours, but we did not get a cert. I am not sure if this will count. I will check with our agency, we have a meeting in 2 weeks.

Can someone please help me out here. I’m trying to get into discussion groups in the forum, but it keeps telling me that my user name doesn’t exist. Do I need to register seperately for a discussion group?
April 14th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
okay, figured that part out. Now, can someone please tell me how you change your “Display name”. You’re supposed to be able to change it through “Account settings” but it doesn’t give me that option.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
My husband and I each had to take the 8 hour hague class separate. It’s online. Cost is $175.00 per couple. It’s a very informative class. We received a certificate’s in the mail which we mail to our agency. The other 2 hours required our agency said we get when we do our travel arrangments.

LID ??-??-??

Kampfiii,
I feel for you! We are LID 1-17-2007. My best advice I can give to anyone with a 2007 or later date is to wait until the end of the year. Maybe things will speed up after the Olympics. We should know by early 2009. If things stay below 10 day batches, I would consider it then. That would probably mean at least a referral around 2012 or possibly later. I am only 34 so I can’t really comment on the age situation. We looked into domestic adoption while we waited, but it would be over $23,000.00. Out of the question. We don’t have the $$$ to do both, especially since we will have to update the homestudy possibly 3 more times and the new I800 maybe 2 more times. That will be almost $4000.00. My heart goes out to you. Only both of you can decide how the wait will affect you emotionally over the next 3-4 years. I know I have really good days and some days I cry all day. Good luck and God Bless!!

Wait4ever:
If you have a current I-171-H on file with USCIS that was filed before April 1, then you don’t need to worry about the new Hague rules (and course requirements) unless you let that I-171-H expire. If your application for renewal reaches USCIS prior to your current one expiring, then you don’t have to worry about Hague requirements. Only those who file after April 1 or who allow their current paperwork to expire before filing for renewal fall under the new guidelines. The rest of us are grandfathered in under the old USCIS rules. This is direct from USCIS. Some agencies are telling their families that they must meet the new guidelines regardless of the status of their I-171H. These agencies may be saying this just in case USCIS changes their rules, but as it stands now, if you do not allow any of your USCIS documents to expire, you don’t need to worry.

Luvbugsmom,
Thanks. I was confused because we have about 3 more years to wait and I know we will have to fill out the new I-800A in late 2009. We never let our paperwork expire. I know we are Grandfathered in under the old rules, but I wasn’t sure if we would have to comply with some of the new I-800A rules. I know this could be confusing to a lot of us who are caught in this wait.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Anyone know when the last update to the review room was?
April 14th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Luvbugsmom, et al - That is not what my agency is saying. We received a communication that said that if you need to do a renewal of your approval after 5/1/08, it will need to be on an I-800A. It has nothing to do with letting it expire. Anyone who renews after 5/1/08 will need to meet the Hague educaction requirements, but not the new rules, according to China.

Luvbugsmom,
Thanks for clarifying. One more hoop to jump this month might push me over the edge! Two step forward, one step back, 26 months down how many to go!

ANyone using GWCA agency? Any word on how well they are able to get SN lists from the CCAA and how often? Any opinions out there?
April 14th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I have noticed that many other agencies seem to get minor SN lists specific to their agency very often, and I wonder if GWCA doesn’t get them as often from the CCAA? Anyone else notice minor correctable SN’s are less prevalent on agency specific SN lists?
