WilliamsFamily, did you really get your LOA 2 weeks after you got your referral? When did you get your PA? We got our referral 4/23/08 and sent our LOI 4/25/08 and got our PA 4/28/08 and am waiting for our LOA but was told it may be 45-60 days, but if you got it THAT quickly, hopefully I will also. I also switched from NSN to SN back in 10/07, I am LID 8/14/07 and our baby is dob 6/07 SN of cleft lip and palate in Hunan.
please pray for us. We have heard of some people still getting denied LOA after getting their PA.

  23. koreaandchina Says:

    sonia:

I read what you posted and it said something that even after LOI that people were denied? What is that about?

  24. sonia Says:

    Koreaandchina:

I have heard of instances where people get their LOI sent to China and get a PreApproval response from China, and while they’re waiting for their formal Letter of Acceptance (or Letter of Confirmation) from CCAA, they get denied, for example one couple where the husband had a misdemeanor drug charge from 30 years ago, got preapproved, referred, but no LOA, a denial instead.

I am concerned because my friends have their referral, Preapproval, but my friend’s husband had a misdemeanor wreckless driving from 8 years ago (No arrest).
They are now waiting for their LOA but are scarred of a denial. Their agency says it should be fine b/c a drug charge is different from a driving charge, but they can’t help but be very worried!! Any thoughts?

  25. firewens Says:

Congratulations everyone! I am so happy for all of you!!! And a set of twins too!! How exciting!!!

    Wendy
    http://adoptionandfire.typepad.com

  26. koreaandchina Says:

    sonia,

no not really sure. I can say this though if it’s wreckless driving that was not reduced down from a DUI or OVI which is what we call it here in Ohio, I work in the court system, that might give them a problem if China looks into that and sees that it was a dui reduced down to a wreckless. But if it’s just a plain wreckless i can’t see it being an issue.

  27. sonia Says:

    koreaandchina,

no, no dui or ovi, just plain stupid wreckless driving, no arrest. hope you are right, and that it shouldn’t be an issue. no drugs, no alcoholl involved. just stupidity. hope all is well for them, thanks for your imput. that’ exactly what their agency said also, that it should be fine.

  28. hashingbaby Says:

We are LID 11 Jan 06 and have not heard a thing despite numerous emails to BLAS over past few weeks, and emails to the DCFS. UK ICA adopters get such a raw deal! I am beginning to panic that there is something wrong and that no one has thought to tell us. It is a Monday bank holiday on 4 May so we have to wait until 5 May to try and work out what is going on. I just want to see her little face!

  29. koreaandchina Says:

    sonia:

If they think there’s going to be questions they can always order a copy of the court transcript and submit that to their agency if CCAA asks questions about that offense. If it was due to bad weather and that is indicated in the police report or court proceeding, then that’s even better. You can even go as far as having the officer write up something and have it notarized by someone indicating that it wasn’t an agregious offense and explain to him it’s for an adoption.

  30. mumarlene Says:

This maybe helps puts the “sickness of babies” into perspective……..Posted on May 3rd, 2008 by Nancy Reyes in All News, Asian News, Breaking News, China News, Medical News, Science NewsRead 175 times. As a doc, during the summer we would often have “stomach flu” outbreaks caused by viruses called “Enteroviruses” which merely means intestine virus. Usually it meant mild diarrhea, and it was worse in young kids. One enterovirus, however, caused only mild stomach upset, but caused lots of tiny canker sores in the mouth, and small blister on the palms and bottom of the feet. We called this disease “Hand Foot and Mouth” Disease.

The virus has nothing to do with the much more serious animal disease “foot and mouth” disease; like most diseases, the name described the disease and was easy for everyone to remember. Technically, the name is “Acute Viral Gingivostomatatitis caused by Coxsackie virus”, which is a bit harder for laypeople to pronounce.

There are a couple other diseases that cause similar sores, but HFM disease (photos HERE) usually was in toddlers or young kids, and you could almost diagnose them acoss the room: They were cranky, and drooling all over mom, and mom usually looked harried from being up all night with a whining Junior.

Usually we just told her to feed him lots of liquids and cool food (syrupy ice cream, pudding) while giving tylenol and dabbing on tiny amounts of numbing medicine for pain. Once in awhile, one of the kids would get a secondary impetigo or mouth infection, but usually they did fine.

The usual cause was a Coxsackievirus, named after the city where the virus was identified. Whenever we had an epidemic of enteroviruses, we had to watch out for the rare complicated case, because these viruses could also infect the brain (encephalitis/meningitis) and sometimes the heart (myocarditis). Another virus of this family is polio. But as a whole, these viruses are mild, and as long as the kid didn’t get dehydrated, complications were rare.

So I was puzzled why so many babies died in the Chinese epidemic. Was it a different bug? And the answer is Yes.

This outbreak is caused by a cousin virus, Enterovirus 71, which has also caused epidemics in Taiwan, Malaysia, Brazil, Europe and the US. And unlike it’s cousin, it’s much more serious, and can even afflict adults. In a 1998 epidemic in Taiwan, 129,000 cases were reported by doctors, and public health authorities estimated that there were probably 1.5 million cases, most of them mild. However, 405 of the cases were “severe”, and 19% of the severe cases died, mostly young children. The deaths were caused by pulmonary edema (the lungs filled up with fluid) or encephalitis (brain infection).

Yet another nasty side effect of this virus is a syndrome that looks like Polio. The New England Journal of Medicine has a report of how people who had severe cases did later, and found that 20 percent of those with encephalitis (where the brain or nervous system was infected) and 50% of those who had limb weakness similar to polio continued to have limb weakness.

The enteroviruses are typically spread via the “fecal/finger” route, and clean water and washing hands usually stops it. The bad news is that some cases seem to be spread via the air, probably from is via close contact with drooling kids who cough into the air.

Before you cancal your plane tickets to the Olympics, however, remember that China is a big country, and the epidemic is in a different area of China. And since most cases are spread via close contact, unless you visit relatives who have a sick kid, you should be okay.

And if your kid comes down with sores in the mouth this summer, remember it’s probably the mild type, and he’ll be better in 5 to seven days.

    Hi SittingTight,

Yes, you would think she would be ok, but after she heard of that other family that passed homestudy, got their I171H, got LOI sent in and PreApproval from CCAA, and then got denied LOA b/c of a misdemeanor drug charge (though it’s different from a misdemeanor traffic/driving that my friends hubbie has), that’s when she worried about her own case.

I think she’ll be ok, but the panick is in til the LOA arrives.

  44. Sitting Tight Says:

    Hi Sonia~
That worries me a little because I know someone else whose husband got a dui while they were waiting. Would that be different from a misdemeanor drug charge? I can understand the panic!

  45. sonia Says:

    Hi SittingTight,

I would have your friend call their agency and see, I think they should be ok since it happened after the papers went in, but I know drug, alcohol, and abuse to children are taken very seriously. I think my friend with the dumb husband with the misdemeanor wreckless driving charge (no alcohol, no drug) should be ok, but it is still worrysome.

  46. Sitting Tight Says:

    ok, thanks Sonia!!

  47. efivewaiting46 Says:

Okay, I have a question for anyone who might be able to answer it.What if you have a dossier submitted to China through one agency(NSN) and you find a SN child you are interested in reviewing from a different agency. Is it totally out of the question to pursure that child.I know of at least one agency that has posted that if you already have a dossier submitted through another agency you are not eligible for their waiting child program.
Thankful to anyone who could help!
