Individual Orphanage Reports

Monday morning, May 19th: HTS reports that Mianyang has become a major refugee center. There are more than 20,000 refugees in the city’s stadium. They are told (but have not confirmed) that the entire center area of the stadium is reserved for toddlers and infants. HTS has someone headed there now so they should know more soon.

Many children who have lost their families, or become separated from their families, have been taken to Chengdu, but not yet to the CWI. There is an after school and weekend activity center that is currently housing them.

Around 30 children were taken to the Chengdu City Park, which is also being used as a refugee camp. Some children have been reunited with family members, and HTS says that some from the media are actively trying to reunite families.

Half the Sky has some pictures up here: http://halfthesky.org/work/earthquake08.php

———————–

Thursday morning, May 15th: I’m still updating this as I get information so if you have information about an orphanage please let me know.

Half the Sky is giving daily updates at their main page, and you can donate to HTS at this link: www.globalgiving.com/pr/2100/proj2086a.html. Half the Sky has people on the ground there and have even been able to give assistance to the Red Cross.

LWB and OCDF also have earthquake funds set up, and appear to have people on the ground who can help. During the snow storms HTS seemed to be the only one in a position with people on the ground close enough to help, but this time we have several organizations with that ability.

—————————

I’m bumping this one back to the top this morning. The asterisks note the areas closest to the epicenter.

As I hear reports of individual orphanages or other programs I will report them here, as well as where I’ve seen the information.

I’ve seen people concerned about other orphanages within the Sichuan province, so I’ll address those as well:

  • We know Yibin is safe, and Luzhou is near Yibin and also far from the quake zone so is also likely safe.

I will note that until we hear from the “should be okay” orphanages then we don’t know for sure. There are scattered deaths in the other provinces, many of which appear to be kind of freaky things that happened, scattered incidences, like the water tower falling. It is likely that those orphanages are safe, but I’m sure we’ll have word from them as soon as communication is up. Most parent groups for the orphanages seem to have someone who can contact the orphanage directly, so if you hear that your child’s orphanage is safe, please let me know. I’ll make a note to the side that the news comes from a parent, no names given. The same goes if your agency verifies that an orphanage is okay, I’ll just make a note to the side that the news comes from an agency.

Thank you so much for keeping us informed, RQ!!!

  2. IansMom Says:

Nanchong #1 and Nanchong #2 are both ok, per our agencies rep in Beijing. Thank goodness because my little one is waiting in #2 and another familiy from our agency is waiting for a little one in #1. We are still hoping to travel mid to late next month…

  3. Mom2Isabel Says:

    IansMom,
So glad to hear that your little one’s orphanage is okay. What a relief!

  4. babyontheway Says:

I have the thought that perhaps it’s our orphanage fees to thank for the fact that these orphanages are relatively undamaged since they are among the newest buildings in China and probably built to a higher safety code.

  5. Patrick Says:

Any information about the SWI of Fengdu? Please, our little sweetie stay there. We will get her in september….
    Patrick

  6. hikinglorax Says:

Hanzhong is now being reported as having significant damage to the building and they are not sure if it can be repaired or will need rebuilt. The kids (mostly sn) are staying outside for now.

  7. skye06 Says:

Patrick, I sent you an email but since then, I found out that Fengdu felt the quake but had no damage. Soyez tranquille, Papa. Tout va bien.

  8. Destiny Says:

I know that Ningxia felt the quake. Does any one know if there was any damage or injury? I have not been able to find any info. With the continued large after trimmers I am conserned because they are on the fault line.

  9. HoosierBaby Says:

Liangping SWI is okay. They had to evacuate, but all the babies are fine. The local elementary school collapsed killing five students and injuring over 100.

  10. Mom2Isabel Says:

Posted on our local FCC Yahoo group from an e-group which is with other families with children from Sichuan.

“Jane Liedtke of Our Chinese Daughter’s Foundation has had her people call all the orphanages in Sichuan to see how they are doing. Here is her report on the orphanages near Nanchong:

Chart from Mable in Beijing Office

    Orphanage Situation

    FuLing
Yesterday people could not stand, jolts heavily, but no one was hurt or died. Building was destroyed a little bit. They will call the to test the building. They may need money for repair the houses.

    Chongqing
People could feel the earthquake strongly. Yesterday they all left the orph for the plant area but not any loss and hurt. They came back to orph today. No needs so far.

    Nanchong II orph
Building cracked, but no one got hurt. No needs so far.

    LiangPing
The orphans are fine. Yesterday the building jolted, they left orph for saftey place. Today is fine. But 5 people died in their local town elementary school and over 100 were hurted. No needs so far.

    YiBin
They are quite far from the Wenchuan county. They could feel the earthquake clearly and left the orph yesterday, but move back today. So far so good. Just have heavy rain. No needs so far.

    Chengdu
People are fine and safe. Building is in distortion. Communication sometimes good, sometimes stopped. Due to the earthquake and heavy rain, the electricity/water supply/gas supply all stopped. Big supermarkets and high buildings are closed. So far their food is enough. But need lots of diapper, since they can not wash the diaper in this situation. There are over 600 kids. The assistant of director
said they do not need clothing, but I am thinking they need, since they cannot wash anything.

    Fengdu
Fengdu people can feel the earthquake but not any bad result.

    Nanchong I
Can feel the earthquake, no any result.

    JingYang
Cannot reach them. Try it continually.

    To RQ,
I didn’t know how to contact you so I will post this here. We recently returned from China with our daughter and someone ask me if I read the article on Chinese adoption from ABC. I told them no and found the article to read. There is also an article that Vietnam has shut down adoptions to the US.
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=4737471

China Adoption article from May 12
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/Story?id=4774224&page=1
I just wanted to share with you just in case anyone else missed this article.

Also my agency has set up a fund to help all these newly orphaned children from the earthquake. If anyone is interested in donating to this fund for the children please post and I will give you their address.

  12. RumorQueen Says:

I’ve tried to not comment on the ABC story yet because I’ve been asked to remain quiet about a few things until an investigation can be made. All I’ll say right now is that if there are problems, at this point the problems appear to be limited to a very, very, very few orphanages.

  13. King Says:

    Thank you RQ.

  14. jbzanie Says:

    From Ask Jane
    ————————-
Just get thru with Deyang Jingyang orp. They are safe now. Other towns nearby,
such as ShiFang was heavily destroed by earthquake. They have no gas, water,
eletricty. They need food supply despairingly, as well diappers. As the
director said, items cannot be purchased locally, but goods can be sent to them
thru POST CHINA. We will mail them .tommorrow thru the earthquake found

  15. crazy4emily Says:

I should know this, but I don’t. What organization is OCDF? I know HTS is Half the Sky and LWB is Love Without Boundries. But i’m not familiar with this one.

And, like Patrick, am very relieved to hear Fengdu is ok. I’m sick at heart thinking of these poor children in other not so lucky areas who have been through so much having to sleep outside now too! makes me weepy.

  16. prechrswife Says:

OCDF is “Our Chinese Daughters Foundation.”

  17. Mom2Isabel Says:

    Hi Crazy4emily!
OCDF is Our Chinese Daughter Foundation.

  19. mbs140 Says:

    RQ and or anyone else…
have we heard about the Qianjiang, Chongqing SWI yet??? We are desperate for information.
    Best,
    Melonie

  20. p12 Says:

Anyone venture to guess how this huge tragedy will affect referrals?
Will it bring things to a halt…while regions regroup?
…could it speed-thing-up to free up resources?
    Something completely different?

  21. Angelynn Says:

Msn is now reporting that the dam upriver from Dujiangyan has major cracks in it, and troops are trying to plug it

    http://news.uk.msn.com/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=8299391

  22. skye06 Says:

MBS140, I spent the afternoon scouring the web and found nothing. Qianjiang is quite a ways from the epicenter so hopefully no news is good news.

  23. Mamman Says:

Anyone who knows: Baoji, Shannxi, should that be Shanxi or Shaanxi?

  24. Lumina Says:

Im not sure if the Hunan Providence was effected any news of the Yiyang SWI?Thanks

  25. klem Says:

I don’t Hunan had any real damage–just felt the shaking.

  26. Piper Says:

Baoji is in Shaanxi, just north of the quake area. Has anyone heard anything about Jiangzhang in Baoji city, Shaanxi? I know the odds are there was not significant damage, but it is driving us crazy not knowing.

  27. waiting4kiera Says:

p12 – I am certainly no expert and someone else can chime in here, but I would think that referrals will slow down further, at least for the affected SWI’s until they can make sure the children remain as healthy as they can be under the circumstances. There was a news report that after the big earthquake in 1976, no one was allowed to travel into China. Considering how transparent they are being with the recovery efforts now, that may not be the case this time. My heart just breaks for all of the people there.

  28. koreaandchina Says:

I have a question. I see that there is a link to donate money, and I also see that supplies that the different SWI’s need. How can we help make sure that those supplies get there or is that what that link up above is for?

Does anyone know? I’d like to donate supplies.

  29. cjajbell Says:

The news this morning (CBC in Canada) commented on the fact that due to the one child policy, many families in China will now be childless because of the losses from the quake. My heart goes out to those parents

I also wonder if this will create more demand for orphans from within China (which is great for them) and possibly slow things down for us (which isn’t so great for us). Just thinking outloud in text format. Anyone else have this worry?

  30. waitingforMariaFaith Says:

We just received an email from our agency that they have a fund set up for orphanages effected by the earthquake. They are, however, taking 10% of the donation for “administrative expenses”, which makes me crazy! I found on the Love Without Boundaries site that 100% of donations to their fund goes to China. I would like to respond to my agency’s “generous” offer with a list of alternatives where 100% of the donation reaches those in need. Can anyone help me with a list of links?

    Thanks!!!

  31. waitingforMariaFaith Says:

Can anyone help me put together a list of earthquake relief funds that donate 100% of the funds to China? My agency just put out an email about their relief fund, but they are keeping 10% for “administrative expenses”. I want to respond to the email group with a list of other funds where 100% goes to China, especially to orphanages and children. All I have right now is Love Without Boundaries. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  32. RumorQueen Says:

waitingforMariaFaith – since Ford is matching funds for HTS, if you donate to them then over 100% of what you donate makes it to the kids.

  33. Winggirl Says:

The following is posted on HTS’s website regarding the Ford matching:

Important Correction Regarding Ford Motor Company’s Generous Matching Gift Program:
Ford Motor Company has generously offered to match every gift to HTS Children’s Earthquake Fund made by its employees via GlobalGiving. The word “employees” was left out of Jenny’s last email and we apologize for the error.

  34. MyKidsMommy Says:

This is the CCAA’s “Press Release”

    Donna

    Date of Release:May 15,2008 Source:CCAA

An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Wenchuan, Sichuan Province on the afternoon of May 12. China was shocked, so was the world. The intensity, wide-spread area affected and severity of loss in human life and property are the most unusual during the past several decades. The situation of this disaster draws the attention of people all over China and the world. After the earthquake struck, we received telephone calls from US and Spanish agencies, which showed a lot of concern over the situation in affected areas and their wish to provide assistance and help to welfare institutions in these places. Hereby China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) would like to give its sincere gratitude to those agencies that are concerned about orphaned and disabled children in welfare institutions. It is known that up till now situation is not quite sure in welfare institutions of severely affected areas due to interruption of communication. There is no one injured or dead in institutions of other affected areas in Sichuan. The damage of houses and facilities is still under investigation for statistics.

Adoptive families and agencies that would like to donate to the welfare institutions in affected areas could transfer the money to the donation account of Child Caring Project of CCAA (http://www.china-ccaa.org/site/infocontent/AXFX_20080202111550314_en.htm). We will make timely arrangement and help the institutions rebuild themselves after the disaster.

  35. p12 Says:

cjajbell – just a guess…but I would think this would create more orphans than demand for them.

  36. life Says:

it would logical seem possible that IA’s would almost stop altogether while those that have lost children in the tragedy look to fill their homes again with a child. Which is good on that side of the picture for those families that are grieving and those babies/children that need families. It is hard on this side when our hearts/homes have been so ready for a child for so long.

  37. SalomesMom Says:

I would imagine that yes, adoptions will slow down. Let’s think of them and pray in whatever faith or form, for them. We need to let them grieve. Tempting as wanting to know when things will speed up for us is, right now, it is not the time. Thank you for the links to where we can contribute and donate.

  38. SamanthaB Says:

The latest news in one of todays swedish newspapers, reported by one of our adoption organisations, that about 4000 children have lost their parents due to the earthquake. 10 children´s homes has collapsed in Sichuan area. They also report that at the moment they are trying hard to find the childrens relatives.
