Book Review: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Harry Dresden is a wizard. He lives in Chicago and he advertises in the yellow pages. This is another one that takes place in a hypothetical real world.
This series eventually pulls in pretty much every supernatural critter out there: wizards, vampires, incubi/succubi, trolls, fairies, werewolves, ghosts, demons… and more I’m probably missing.
Some are Harry’s friends, but most are not. Most are creatures he has to fight in order to save humans. Or, often, to save himself.
These books are written by a man, where most of the books of this genre are written by a woman. And I think it makes for a refreshing change. While there is some romance, it’s not an over riding theme, and what is there is more matter-of-fact than sweep-you-off-your-feet. These books are primarily about action and danger and consequences. And there is a lot of all of that.
This is also one of my top five favorite series.

Jim Butcher is a good friend of my husband’s. Thanks for mentioning his books. We have loved reading everything he has published. For those who like more of the fantasy side of storytelling he has another great series about characters who can control physical elements (wind, earth, water, etc) through the use of “Furies.” There are 4 books in the series so far and they make for more great reading.
For those who like a solid romance, Jim’s wife Shannon K. Butcher has started writing and now has 2 books out with a 3rd on the way and a 4th one planned. Her stories feature a group of guys who served together in the middle east and now do private security work in the US. The female characters are all strong, independent types.

I love this series too! I was really sad when they dropped the tv show. It could have been really great.

I absolutely love this series also. Harry is so funny – I am constantly laughing at something he says or does. I just read Dead Beat and LOVED the Dinosaur scene – how fantastic to image! I also enjoy his relationship with Bob the skull – he just cracks me up too. I just picked up Proven Guilty from the library and can’t wait to get to it unfortunately I also just picked up Blood Noir and that will be read first :)
Thanks again for providing these book reviews – I really enjoy them!
