Dark Knight

They got the title right, it is a dark movie.

And long. Very long.

The girls had dinner with their grandparents last night and RK and I went to a 5:00 movie. The schedule said it was a two and a half hour movie, but we didn’t get out until ten till eight. And our dinner was a big bag of popcorn. Mmmmm.

It was a good movie. Disturbing in places, but still good. The acting was incredible, especially The Joker. And the special effects were great. I’d heard a lot of people say you have to see this one on the big screen, and I can see that to an extent, but it’s not like Lord of the Rings where it’s absolutely necessary you see it on the big screen in order to get that whole “take your breath away” thing. All in all, I recommend it, but it’s probably one we could have waited to watch on DVD. With that long of a movie it would be good to be able to get up halfway through and move around before starting it back again.

I was pretty interested in one of the previews, though. A new Mummy movie, this one is about the First Emperor of China. You know, the one responsible for the terracotta warriors. I’ll be keeping my eye on what people say about that one, but it’s another possibility for something I want to see.

Honestly though, the most memorable part of my night last night was walking alone into a public restroom. I can’t remember the last time I did that. Nowadays I have two kids in tow when we do the public bathroom thing, and if there is no family bathroom then I generally head to the handicap stall so we can all fit in there at once. No need for that last night. Just me myself and I. And, it was nice for a change, but I also discovered that I’m pretty happy with the group effort.

And then we picked the girls up and took them home and had lots of snuggles as we got them ready for bed. I went to bed with GlitterGirl and talked to her for maybe fifteen minutes. I had told her she couldn’t see this movie with us because people said it was scary, so last night she wanted to hear from me what was scary about it. I wanted to tell her something without giving her nightmares, so I just said that Batman had to stop a very bad man from hurting people, and that the bad guy was very scary. She asked if I was scared and I told her (honestly) that I only had to hide behind daddy’s shoulder one time, but that there were a bunch of scary parts, and that I wasn’t scared anymore because it was only a movie and we were safe in our house now. That seemed to work for her.

This plan has promise though. If we were to see a normal length movie then the whole “dinner with the grandparents” thing will probably give us enough time to do dinner and a movie. Maybe I can talk my parents into doing this once every other month or something. It’s time RK and I started dating again.

Have now seen both movies (Dark Knight & the Mummy one). The Dark Knight is definitely better than the mummy movie…better dialog, better character development, less predictable… but I really enjoyed the China aspect of the mummy movie….and recognized a few Mandarin words.

One of the scenes was really gross…..I was wishing that I hadn’t just put a nacho full of gooey cheese into my mouth.

I thought the Dark Knight was great. It was long though. I missed about 5 min. or so going on a potty break.

I’m not easily grossed out, theatrical violence (as opposed to real life) does not usually bother me, and yet this movie bothered me. I LOVED the story line. I loved the actors. I love Batman. But something about this movie did NOT sit well with me at all. It started with the Joker making the pencil disappear, and then I just never managed to stop wincing all through the movie. Perhaps I was just in a weird mood. I’ve warned my friends who might consider taking a younger person with them that it’d be a bad idea based on my own reaction. I’m sure LOTS of people will enjoy it, I just didn’t on the particular day I watched it.

I agree I would never take young kids to see this movie. I did take my 15 year old and my husband.. I would not take much younger than that. The Joker is intense.

I thought the movie was great! Much better than the last one. I thought that was very boring. :-I

I’ve seen Dark Night and Mummy 3. Loved each one for it’s own great qualities.

IMO, Mummy 3 does not deserve the bum rap it is getting. I like it much more than the Mummy 2. It is much more on track with Mummy 1, which I LOVE. I read a bunch of reviews and I think Ebert is dead on. I did miss Rachael Weiss though.

I have to say that I am into “hero”, fantasy, scifi, genras. On the way home DH and I both agreed that the 2 Chinese woman are they type of female, action adventure heros we would like DD to have. Strong, smart, couragous, self sacrificing, AND the daughter gets the guy without ever taking her clothes off. He likes her because she is strong, smart and brave. WOO HOO!!!

JUST got home from the Mummy 3 and the movie would have been GREAT if not for the horrible acting. We were so excited to see it and the only one who didn’t make me cringe was Jet Li. Even Brendan Frasier seem like he was just reading lines. I loved the other Mummy movies but hated the Evie and Alex actors in the new one.

Loved Dark Knight - for sure one of the better movies I have seen in a long time. I would love to own it on DVD eventually. Violence and that sort of thing never bothers me much in movies (yeah, I am weird) and I did not even notice the length of the movie. I saw Mamma Mia this past weekend, and it was okay. I was hoping it would be better, but I enjoyed it.

Looking forward to seeing Mummy 3 and I have not seen Batman ( I think it would just be way too dark for me) but I did read through Breaking Dawn this weekend. I am sure I can count myself a Stephenie Meyer fan (thank you very much AQ- I only started the series after your first review on her) if I had a boarder’s wrist band with a low number of 7 on it! And was there for the mid-might release! Yah I am pretty sure that I was the only woman over 22 years old with a book her in hand yelling Go Team Jacob!!! Wahoo! at 12:05am

I totally enjoyed the story and will probably read through it again. Thanks RQ for your reviews! Totally help divert with the waiting.
