Quake in Southwest China, Yunnan Province
A 5.9 quake struck Yingjiang county in Yunnan Province. It appears to be right on the border with Burma/Myanmar. Electricity and communication is down in the affected areas, you can see a video below. Sorry, no videos in English yet that I can find.
There have been three damaging quakes in all: 5.0, 4.9 and 5.9. Of course, there have been lots of smaller quakes, one report says there have been 130 quakes of less than 4.0. There are reports of thousands of houses being damaged, as well as schools, hospitals, and roads.
There are reports that tens of thousands of people are staying at Dayingjiang Square and in the playgrounds of nearby schools. Reports say the local Civil Affairs office has 5,000 tents on the way. In all, it is reported that 120,000 people have been evacuated from the area.
Three are confirmed dead so far and relief efforts continue.

:( This is my daughter’s province, and oh how my heart aches for everyone still there. 310 miles due west of Kunming…and one of the foster villages is west of Kunming (not 310 miles, but I would say 30-60).

We recently had an earthquake in southern CA, and I know how scary they can be. We’re lucky enough to live where building codes are tough. It must be terrifying to live where your whole house could collapse around you with even a middling magnitude earthquake. This “lucky” year hasn’t turned out so lucky for China afterall, huh? It’s been one disaster after another. I hope this is the end of it.
