Growth Spurts and Halloween and Dance Class
TwinkleToes had quite a growth spurt this summer. I knew she was taller. I even knew exactly how much taller (pencil marks on the door frame). But when I put her in jeans this morning, jeans that fit her last spring, it actually sunk in how much she’s grown.
Back in the spring the 12 month pants were the perfect length for crop pants. They now come to the bottom of her knees. The waist fits, but they are wayyyy too short. The 18 month pants (with the waist taken up so they didn’t fall off) were the right length back in the spring, but the 18 month pants now fall off even with the waist taken up, and they are most definitely high waters.
The Children’s Place sent something out about a sale, so I’ve ordered a few pair of 24 month jeans for TT that were on sale. The adjustable waist starts at 24 month, so I’ll have to see if they will adjust down far enough for her. If not then we’ll have to take them up as well. They are going to be huge on her though even if we can get the waist small enough to keep them on, no way around that. She’s grown two and a half inches and gained one pound. That means she’s skinnier now than she was at the beginning of the summer. Taller, but skinnier.
And the child eats. A lot. More than me at some meals. Plus lots of snacks in between. We have apples and bananas and oranges and raisins and broccoli and cauliflower and carrots and a few cheeses that they can get to pretty much whenever they want (except for the hour and a half before meals) plus crackers and chex mix stuff that they can ask permission for. We go through a ton of cauliflower and baby carrots and cheese in our house. Not to mention the fruits, those (and the carrots) are often gone before the week is up and it’s time to go back to the grocery store. And still, both girls are tiny.
GlitterGirl has also grown and is in the next size up. Most of her pants have adjustable waists though, and that works for her. We also buy leggings and take the waist up and they fit her like pants instead of being skin tight. I bought pants in the next size up for her in the spring when they were on sale, so we’re good to go with GG.
GlitterGirl is thin but we’ve always been able to work around it, but TwinkleToes is so skinny that it’s harder to work around. I’ve got GG’s old 2T and 24m pants with the waist already taken up, and they just fall right off of TT.
So, the good news is that they are both growing. Yeah!!!
Now to find clothes that fit.
Both girls have also decided what they want to be for Halloween. Well, TT wanted to be Kai-Lan, but I had to tell her there are no Kai-Lan Halloween costumes, so she’s going to have to go with her second choice. There was some whining, but now she’s excited about choice number two, so we’re good. We’re going to sit down this weekend and order the costumes to make sure we get them before they run out. TT is going to dance in a local festival in mid October and they are supposed to wear their Halloween costumes to dance. How cute is that going to be? They actually have the teens in the class just after theirs go on stage and dance with them so the little three year olds aren’t scared on stage. They practiced with them for the first time last week, the teens get there a few minutes early and we stay a few minutes late and the little ones get ten minutes of practice with the big girls so they get used to them. Have I mentioned before how much I love this dance studio and how great their preschool program is?
They have this thing where they imagine that they are swans. They lift one wing and let it float back down a few times. And then the other wing. And then both wings. Amazingly, it looks graceful and, well, it looks like ballet. Not like three year old kids usually do ballet, but real ballet. And at the beginning of class they do this thing where they sit in the floor and do “pretty backs” and sit up straight and then “ugly backs” where they hunch down. And the teacher says “Pretty backs” with this singsong voice and “ugly backs” with a low growl kind of voice. Then later when they are standing up doing something she does the singsong “pretty backs” and they all stand up straight and it is very impressive. There is another exercise where they “sharpen their pencils”, which means they point their toes. And then later when they are doing something else the teacher tells them to sharpen their pencils and they all point their toes. I’ve never seen little three year old kids dance as well as these kids do, and these little ones are doing it after only a few lessons. How amazing is that?

Thanks for the great stories!
I have given up on jeans for my daughter. We stick to pants that are slimmer because jeans just don’t fit. Even adjustable waist jeans–they fit around the waist when adjusted, but they are too roomy in the tush area so they don’t look comfortable to me. Those Gymboree leggings have been great. Children’s Place and Target knit pants work well too. Wal-Mart is always too big. I can buy tops there, but bottoms only work when they are not long pants (so length doesn’t matter) and I buy them 1-2 sizes too small. My mom loves to buy Talbot’s Kids (we heard they were being discontinued soon) and slim stuff is never on sale, so she buys regular and alters them for us. Good luck with your clothing hunt!

So many great ideas from TT’s dance classes! Sounds like she’s at a wonderful place. I’ll even be able to use the ‘pretty backs’ ‘ugly backs’ with some of my younger piano students.
Glad you’re able to find clothes for your little, little girls. Friends of mine brought their daughter home recently and at 21 months she’s wearing newborn pants and she’s a good eater too.
Oh to struggle with not finding clothes because I’m too little for them… :o)

We have the same problem with blue jeans so we do a lot with leggings. Great fit and keeps her warm in the winter.

GG’s school has a rule against leggings by themselves, so even though they fit her like pants, I don’t let her wear them to school. But, she’s got a lot of cool skirts and skorts and she can wear the leggings under those when the weather turns cool.
However, GG really wants to wear jeans, so I work to find jeans that fit her.
Leggings still work good for TT, her school has no such rule. But, they just aren’t all that practical at her school. Jeans just hold up better than other clothes. Her school is very big on them wearing clothes that they don’t have to worry about messing up. They use paints and scissors and markers, plus they spend a decent amount of time on the playground. Jeans just work better than leggings and other fabrics, they hold up and they can handle rough treatment when you try to get stuff out of them.

I feel your pain!
My oldest is about to turn 7 and she is 41 lbs! I also had to take in her clothes until she was about 2.5 and I could start putting her in pants with adjustable waists. Thankfully she loved dresses.
I did find some very slim fitting jeans at Kohl’s that fit her wonderfully (6 slim). Hunting for uniforms that fit has been a huge challenge.
Now, for the little one (2 1/2), she’s a pretty good size and I don’t think will need the slims. We still have a nice size potbelly hanging over the diaper! :)

The ballet description is extraordinary. So cute.
My first daughter was enrolled in (not one) but TWO ten week classes at age 3 for teeny-weeny ballet. Parents had to wait outside and peer through a window. She learned to stand on her floor mat shaped like a star and wait for the teacher to give instructions. When the instruction came and the music started, there was a 50-50 chance she would follow everyone else. She turned out to be more of a modern dancer (I guess). There were always about 2 or 3 little girls doing their own thing. Meanwhile, I stood outside making sure that I told myself…”My daughter is not me. She and I are not perfect. She is self expressing and learning to be in a group” So what I am saying is that…I learned more than my daughter in ballet class. Lucky you for having a more artistic experience!

Janie and Jack makes clothes that fit taller, skinnier kids. They are cut that way. You might give it a try – if there is not a store in your area you can order on-line. The clothes last a long time and are nicely made.
