Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

I’m off work today so I can get the house ready to be invaded tomorrow. The house is mostly ready, actually, and mostly thanks to RK. So today is mostly so I can put some of the food together ahead of time so things aren’t so hectic tomorrow morning. I can put two of the casseroles together today and stick them in the fridge so all I have to do tomorrow is stick them in the oven. And I can make the cake early. And RK can do things like chop onions today so that doesn’t have to be done tomorrow. I cheated and bought a frozen pie, but that’s my only cheat this year. Everything else will be made the hard way, from scratch.

Since I’m a vegetarian, I don’t do turkey. My mom usually brings the turkey, but this year she decided to do something else, she keeps calling it a smoked hen, which I guess means smoked chicken. Apparently not everyone agrees with the change to tradition though, so my MIL is bringing the turkey this year. So now we will have two dead animals instead of one in my house. Not good, but it’s only once a year. I can handle it. Probably.

Both girls are out of school today so we got to cuddle in bed this morning and watch cartoons together. That was nice, and now everyone has on comfy warm clothes and there is a fire in the fireplace and life is good.

I will check in occasionally to see if there are rumors, but most of today is going to be spent with my girls.

We’re vegetarians too. Yes, it’s pretty hard to let other people bring dead animals into your house (my mom always brings a small turkey breast) but thank goodness it’s only one day a year.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, RQ. Thank you for all you do. I am thankful for you. You have saved my sanity during this loooong wait!

RQ: My husband and I and my mom and sister are all veg too! They all come over to our house with some other veg friends and we have an amazing turkey-free meal! Any time you are in Seattle we would love to host you and your family for a veg Thanksgiving, or at any other time!

A big Thanksgiving wish to you, RQ, for all the help and solace you bring to all of us who are still waiting. I don’t know what we’d do without you. You make a difference for so many people. Thank you!!

Have a wonderful holiday. BTW when my mom made smoked hen it was a guinea hen although that is rather small for a family gathering.

    Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone!!
I am feeling really optimistic today, because after the holidays, our referral is hopefully within sight!!
RQ, thanks for keeping this going- I don’t get any updates from my agency anymore, its pretty depressing.
If I didn’t have this site, I would be completely in the dark!!

We’re vegetarian also, but I’m making a small turkery because we have a lot of meat-eating company coming. I do make a frozen Tofurkey which is very good. As far as I’m concerned though, the side dishes are always the best part of the meal!
    Enjoy!

She works, she raises two kids, she runs this blog, she reads, she cooks from scratch, she hosts Thanksgiving — AND she’s a vegetarian, which I consider another accomplishment — RQ, you’re no good for those of us with low self-esteem! I think you probably accomplish more in five minutes than I manage to get done in a whole day. Pat yourself on the back, and happy Thanksgiving!

Oh my, your description of the dead creatures made me chuckle ;o)

I hope you and your family have a beautiful Thanksgiving!

P.S. My friends once had a tofu turkey…not sure how they accomplished that one or how it turned out, but I’m told it looked neat :o)

A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, RQ.

Vegetarian here, too. We are headed to my grand parent in laws for the day. There are a few of us veg heads there so I prepare a vegetarian dressing. I’m gluten free, too, so it’s gluten free as well! But, I love the smell of the ham. I just wish I could eat it!

Happy Thanksgiving to All. I am grateful for so many things this year.

ruizhousmom, you forgot to mention that she also goes on dates with her husband and has clearly satisfying marital relations!

  14. RumorQueen Says:

ROTFL Tresordasie, it was just one date… but yes, there was a happy ending. With fireworks. The good news is that the kids and the grandparents had fun so we might actually start doing that once every month or two.

And ruizhousmom, remember, RK does a lot of work around the house. He did most of the pre-cleaning, actually. The slaw is also completely his baby, which he made yesterday.

And the cooking from scratch thing? Pretty much only happens at holidays. I did make a triple batch for one of the casseroles yesterday though. One of the batches went in the freezer to pull out at another time and stick in the oven. The other two went in the frig and will soon be going in the oven for today’s meal.

As for the vegetarian thing, I used to do the fake turkey thing, but there is enough other food that I don’t really need it so I stopped that a few years ago. The dressing and gravy are vegetarian but are good enough that no one ever complains (and those who don’t know are always surprised to find out). They bring their own turkey, so everyone is happy. It’s just that this year we’ve got a hen and a turkey and that’s two dead animals and it’s a bit harder to deal with the fact that our family is responsible for the death of two animals instead of just one for our meal this year. And that’s mostly my issue, so I’m dealing with it. I can’t stand the smell of cooked meat, but since it’s cooked elsewhere and then brought here, the house doesn’t really smell like cooking-dead-animal, so I’m at least good with that part of it.

I know, it’s very hard for me to decide that anything has to die. My DH says that I should open a turkey refuge center. A life is a life! :) No matter how small! (Or how feathery)
    Happy Thanksgiving!
