Favorite Toys so far
The TinkerToys were a big hit. And I’ve enjoyed playing with them as well.
TwinkleToes absolutely loves the Vtech Write & Learn Letter Pad. She’s played with it for hours already, with no hint of wanting to put it down any time soon.
And both girls have enjoyed the Hyper Dash. You put the different targets all around and then listen to the handheld unit tell you which to run to. Once you’ve run to all of them it tells you your time, and for multiplayer play it keeps up with that as well. There are several games, including a memory one where you put all of the targets in front of you and have to keep up with what it says (yellow blue red blue yellow blue, and then you do it). GlitterGirl has made it to eight in a row, but can’t make it any farther. Twinkletoes hasn’t tried that one yet. Technically TT is supposed to be too young for this game, but she’s fine running to the color it tells her and then listening for the next color and running to that one.
RK is very happy with his 1 TB External Hard Drive.
But those are the toys that have received the most play in the first days after Christmas. There are a few things (like the Blokus Game) that we just haven’t had time to really get into yet.
The V-Motion game thingy seems like it will be a lot of fun, but, again, it hasn’t gotten much use while the other toys were being played with. Honestly, that’s kind of by design since we couldn’t buy an extra controller, and while there is only one controller I’d prefer to keep it in the background. Almost everyone is out of stock on the controllers, and the stores online that have it in stock are asking for more than double what it should cost. So, we’ll wait for the reputable stores to get it back in stock and then we’ll buy the second controller. From what I’ve seen of it so far though, I love the game. The controllers are like the Wii controllers, you move them around to move the characters on screen around. So, to fly the plane you tilt the controller left and right to turn it left and right, and tilt the front up and down to make the plane go up and down. Very cool. We’ve played the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
cartridge so far, and while it’s not as educational as the Leap Frog stuff, there is some educational merit to it. But where the leapster stuff is education first and game second, these seem to be game first and education second. But, as we get to the other cartridges I’ll tell you what I think of them, too. Hopefully some of them will have more educational merit.
And as the other toys get playtime I’ll comment on them as well.

Favorite present around here? Kitchen, first and foremost, followed by digital camera and doctor kit.

We got Blokus 2 years ago and it is absolutely the favorite game around my house. We’ve had friends over and played the game (adults) and then they’ve bought it for their families because it is so much fun!
This Christmas our 2 year old loved her kitchen, doll stroller, and rocking horse the best. Big kids: Xbox 360 and ipod touch.

TT doesn’t really play with the kitchen much anymore, I’m considering getting rid of it and putting some kind of storage something-or-other where it currently is. It’s a big kitchen, the biggest you could buy however many years ago we bought it for GG, and if we replace that wall with storage then that should go a long way toward solving our toy explosion problem in the den. I figured it would be next year before we were ready to get rid of it, but TT hasn’t actively played with it in months, I don’t think. (I’ve warned RK that I feel a trip to IKEA coming up in the near future.)
I gave my old digital camera to GG a couple of years ago and she loves being able to take her own pictures. TT isn’t ready for that yet though. My dad gave us his old one yesterday to give to TT (he got a new one for Christmas), but I’m going to put it up for a bit and give it to TT later. Or maybe just hand it over on special days or something.
GG got new speakers for her computer (that’s where her music collection resides, I haven’t allowed for an mp3 player yet since I think headphones are a bad idea for kids). Lucky for all of us, I mostly like her music at this point. Mostly.

RQ, I just downloaded Firefox and the blog works fine now. It was completely frozen with Explorer.

RQ,
I appreciate your review of the girls toys. As a Nana who loves to buy for her grandchildren at Christmas, I am always on the lookout for things that I know children like.
I would love to know how TT liked her big girl room.

RQ, what did TT think of her new room? I hope that went well :)

A perfume making kit and a spa fantasy kit are huge hits here. They’re sort of like chemistry kits with a girly theme. Puzzles, craft items, a Sponge Bob Operation game, Easy Bake oven, and a glow in the dark ball are also good for the girls. Webkinz are big, too. The girls are at an age when they love everything and are still good about sharing. What fun! Some gifts have yet to be explored, but these are big hits so far! DH and I opted for more practical presents for ourselves. Santa favors the girls for sure, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

Hola!!
Happy days after Christmas. RQ, I would love to hear about the room as well…
Favorite toys here — still for the 8 year old — Legos. All lego kits.
For the newbie 2 year old…..I think the Hess Truck and the cars from CARS. He likes the kitchen too but not sure about it. It’s the small Fisher PRice Grow with me. So it’s not too big and loud and comes with a cool shape sorter pot.
He’s afraid of Elmo live.
My personal fav — Rayman Rabbits for the Wii which uses the Wii fit board. It’s got a part where you sit one the Wii Fit board and ride down a mountain and control the bunny with your bottom.
FUN!

I love hearing everyone’s favorites. I tend to like old-fashioned toys and went very low-tech on gifts this year. The favorite here was a wooden pretend grocery-store and lots of wooden play food from Melissa and Doug and HABA. We added a balance scale and cash register and the girls have spent many hours selling, shopping, restocking, pricing, adding, learning about money, etc. They are having so much fun playing with it. I have discovered German made toys (like this little store and foods) and must say they are really beautifully made (I love wooden toys). The other toy they liked is a doorway puppet theater and puppets. Oh, and the Easy Bake Oven was a hit with my 5 year old (she really wanted one) but it’s not my thing. I’d rather just cook with her using real appliances, but my husband has had fun “baking” with her and using the “Easy Bake Frosting Sensation” icing pen..he likes gadgets.

We aren’t quite done with Hanukkah yet, but my 3-year-old has already been very “gifted up” between us and all the adoring relatives. She got a lot of books this year, probably because the relatives remembered all my ungracious grumbling last year about having to find space for all the new “stuff” in my tiny house. One fave book is called Bats in the Library — beautifully illustrated. Another really cool one is called The Pet Dragon. It’s a gorgeous story book that tells the story of a lost baby dragon, and incorporates Chinese characters into the illustrations to show how the characters in many cases are really little icons of what they mean.
Among non-book gifts, her favorites so far are a Melissa & Doug ice cream set; a chef’s dress-up outfit I got at Target (she looks so darn cute in the apron and hat!); and, interestingly, a toy consisting of a simple silk scarf that is intended to be played with in all kinds of creative ways. She likes that one so much that she’s been taking it to bed with her.

Well, Baby G’s fav was her GlowWorm –she LOVES music!!! she was also a big fan of her play shopping cart and food, she loves pushing it around which is awesome because she’s not quite walking on her own yet. Sometimes she just pushes it up against the couch and puts things in and takes them out tasting each as she goes!!! Christmas was a lot more fun this year than it has been for the last several I can assure you.

We got our 8 yr old boy an inexpensive digital video camera (very cheap, about $30 on sale at Big Lots), Air Hog helicopter (so fun, but keep an eye on the kitties/doggies during play), Matchboxes/Hot Wheels, which are still such a great deal at a buck apiece, more Matchboxes, Automoblox (http://www.automoblox.com/) which are wooden/plastic cars that can taken apart and mixed/matched with other styles, and a Razor scooter, he’ll have to be helmeted up in the spring for that one. All are a hit!

One more, Electronic Snap Circuits! Very cool, and when his friends that are girls come over, it seems to be something they almost always play with, too. We had a set, but we continue to add to it for gift giving times.

How’s the room??? did your daughter sleep good in there?
My boys are older and got visa cards…..they LOVE that and one bought and X-box 360 with all his money. The other wants to buy some new shoes and clothes! Our daughters first Christmas was this year and her favorite thing was playing with her cousins! She loves them and ran all night on Christmas. She does love her new tea-set though and her potato head guy.
The tree was taken down Christmas day and the rest of the stuff put away yesterday! I was so happy to get it all put away and will be just as excited to get it out again next year!
Now on to the New Year where we can post our new year resolutions……..

Believe it or not, the most popular “toy” for our 3-year-old is a magnifying glass! She hasn’t put it down since pulling it out of her stocking Christmas morning. She’d probably take it to bed with her if we’d let her, but I’m afraid she’d spend all night looking at things! Other popular toys are her Rose Petal Cottage, fire truck, Mulan doll and camera – most of which have been examined under the magnifying glass!

There are so many and more not even out of the boxes. His favorites are the $4 mickey mouse plush, the $8 pull fisher price doggie, the geotrax police car, the Guido and Luigi small talking cars from CARS and the Lightning Mcqueen RC car. He’s 2 1/2. A few I can’t let him play with without supervision yet. All favorites are listed in order. Why is it the cheapest gifts are the best?
He is interested and spends some decent time with the kitchen and the see n say and cowboy hat and 8 key piano keyboard.
