Dropbox
As I’m loading the programs I need onto my T91 (finally), I thought it might be good to share some of the programs I use that help me run my life. Most are freeware. Free is good.
Dropbox is one of those things that vastly simplified my life. Before Dropbox, I had to email files I needed to myself. Or, if I was going to have a computer (or have access to one), but not the internet, then I had to put files onto a flash drive.
Files like the spreadsheets I use to keep track of stats on the site. Those files are changed every time the review room moves forward, or every time referrals come out, or when a new shared list comes out. There are also files at work I really need to have access to so I can work on them when I get a chance. Not to mention it’s handy to have the ebook I’m reading where I can get to it.
Dropbox sets up a folder on every computer I install it on, and then keeps all files in that folder synchronized across all of my computers. And, it allows me to access them via a web portal on computers that do not have the Dropbox software installed.
You get two gigs of space for free, and if you are referred by someone then you and the person who referred you gets a little extra space when you sign up, so if you use this link then you’ll get an extra 250MB on top of the two gigs.
Files are private by default, so only you have access to them. But, there is also an option to make a folder public, in case you want to share something with friends or family. I have not made use of that feature yet, but it’s nice that it’s there should I want to.
They seem to have reasonably good safety protocols in place, but I don’t have any really sensitive files uploaded, just the same. Still, for the files I generally need to have access to, it has made my life so much easier to have a program that automatically keeps those files sync’d on all of my computers.

I’ve been using LiveMesh for similar purposes but I find it is pretty clunky on my iMac. Does Dropbox play better with Mac?

This has really filled a gap for me in sharing files between home and work (home computer doesn’t recognize my flash drive half the time, and I end up re-booting). Great tip — thanks!
