Call For Action – Haiti

Families with an adoption already in process in Haiti are being allowed to bring their children home on a “humanitarian parole”. This is great news. However, they still have to show that they qualify for the humanitarian parole, and apparently there are only two people working to process everything – meaning that some agencies and families have not been able to get kids out of Haiti and to safety.

So we are being asked to make sure the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is aware of the problem. She is being active in trying to get these kids home, and it’s possible she is not aware of this bottleneck.

You can call her office at 202-647-4000, or you can send them an email at this state.gov address. You can send something along the lines of:

Thank you for allowing humanitarian parole for those orphans in Haiti already in process for an adoption. However, paperwork must still be processed, and there are only two people trying to process over 1,000 applications per day. Is there anything that can be done to work through this bottleneck so these agencies and families can get the children to safety as quickly as possible?

I think that is probably all we should ask for at this point. I am told that there are talks underway to get more children out of there and brought to safety, and I’m tempted to ask about that, but I think we’re better off focusing on one issue at a time.

    Sorry, meant to say “troublesome”

Oh how horrible guangximom. There was a link (an allowed link) to an agency site on the previous thread where the agency talked about how they got the supplies from the airport to the orphanage – by putting a tarp over the supplies and having people lay on the tarp looking like they were dead.

I keep trying to tell people law and order have broken down, and that these kids need to be gotten out of the country as soon as possible… and still there are people saying they need to be kept there no matter what. I’m not advocating allowing children to be adopted who do not have paperwork showing they are an orphan. I’m just advocating keeping these children alive until someone can figure out if either 1) they are an orphan and can be adopted or 2) they have family looking for them and they need to be reunited with their family.

Hello everyone, this is my first post! I’ve been a stalker for about four years. I just sent an email to the state dept. I’ve been watching and reading everything I can on the Haiti orphans and it is just heartbreaking. Thanks for everything you do. Waiting for Eliana, 4/11/06

    RQ,

That is my agency and I am very proud of what they did. I agree with you completely, these kids are facing much darker days ahead if they remain where they are.

I sent my request in as well, and forwarded to my family & friends asking for their support as well. I can’t imagine having to go thru this as an adult, it is 100x worse for a child. I am thankful for the people and organization working for the children. We can’t let up, they can’t be forgotten, they can’t lose their childhood or their hope. THANK YOU for keeping this front & center.
