New Special Needs List
A new list came out Thursday night / Friday morning, and apparently it was a big list.
I’ll do a new “SN When” post this weekend.
Congrats to everyone matched off of this list!

We were matched on Thursday with
a child with a cleft palate, repaired lip
Our insurance tells us they are going
to pre exist this condition. We have
an individual plan, not a group plan.
What can we do? We have waited so
long. LID 8-7-06

blessedbybaby: i know that group health insurance HAS to cover adopted children and not consider pre-existing conditions. but i don’t know about individual insurance. if you haven’t yet join the yahoo cleft group ASAP and you’ll find your answers searching the archieves.
also – this site is GREAT.

blessedbybaby: Congratulations on being matched!!! I’m not sure what the regulations are as far as individual insurance plans. But, check with your closest Shriner’s Hospital. They have wonderful, very skilled doctors. There is not a charge to any family for their services. They will even help with transportation if you live a long distance away from one of their hospitals.
PM me if you’d like more info. And again, CONGRATS!!!

Blessedbybaby: Check out Shriners Hospital for Children. Do you live near a Shriners Hospital? I’m not exactly sure but Shriners may do surgeries, therapies, ect. for children with and without insurance. Congrats. I came home with my daughter on Feb. 11, 2010 and she has a repaired cleft lip but to my suprise no cleft palate. Alison.

I don`t think they can do this. Read this http://healthinsuranceinfo.net/getinsured/indiana/individual-health-plans/individual-health-insurance-sold-by-private-insurers/
As others have mentioned Shriners will provide no cost services and give your baby amazing care. Is there a Shriners near you?

Thanks so much for the info! I did
not think of Shriners. We are in
TN, not close to a Shriners, but
we don’t mind driving. I will
contact them on Monday.

It is true that individual plans can pre-exist conditions for your child, where group plans cannot. Some states have laws against this. Check with your state insurance commission. Even if your state has a law, it may depend on where the plan is administered. I really wish agencies and social workers would make sure people are fully aware of this. Good luck. If you cannot get coverage, I hope the Shriners hospital is a good solution for you.

blessedbybaby:
There is a Shriners hospital in Lexington, KY. Depending on where you are in TN, it might not be more than a few hours drive for you.

At the risk of being banned for this post I need to point out that a new law is being considered that would make it illegal for individual health insurance companies to NOT cover pre=existing conditions in CHILDREN. If passed, this particular aspect would go into effect immediately. Just thought I would mention this in case anyone is interested who has an indvidual health insurance policy.
I have group insurance but my husband had a cancer diagnosis last year and this locks me into my large corporate job forever unless some of these new laws pass. This is why I am tracking this information closely. I’d rather be self-employed in my side business but dare not due to his pre-existing condition! (Sorry if this is too over the top political.)

Blessedbaby Please look into what your insurance company is telling you if you haven’t. I don’t know anything about private insurance companies, but ours (group) tried to pull that, and I wonder how many of them think they can get away with it. Don’t trust them. Research it. I would probably throw it in their face this is exactly why the national health care plan (whether you agree with it or not use it!) is being created and if they don’t accommodate you, you’ll take your business elsewhere, and I would do just that if you are able. Sorry for the rant, it makes me mad. There is a Shriner’s in Houston that does clefts and I think one is starting in Tulsa. I don’t know if they all do clefts. Violet

blessedbybaby – your insurance should not be able to classify your child’s condition as a pre existing because your child does not currently reside in the USA and they have no existing medical records here. That is what I was told when I called my insurance company. Since there was no medical records on file here they could not do that to us. You should check around …I think someone at your insurance agency needs to check into this further and may have given you the wrong information, maybe they think you are doing domestic adoption and looked under the wrong information. I was told this information with Blue Cross and United Healthcare. Good Luck…
