red dot on forehead
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:16:30 PM »

Hello.  We recently received updated photos of our daughter who will be 4 in August.  We noticed that she had a bright red dot on her forehead (it wasn't there in February).  It doesn't look like anything permanent, but maybe one of you will know if this has any significant meaning.  Any thoughts?

My oldest daughter, adopted at 10 mths from Ankang, Shaanxi, had a red dot on her forehead on her referral photo. Our guide told us that it was a way for her nanny (who prepared her for the photo session) to show the prospective parents that she wishes her health, happiness and long life.

I forgot to mention that yes, the red dot is indeed temporary; the nanny probably washed it off that very same day!

My daughter is from Inner Mongolia, and the red dot there symbolizes part of the Hindu religion.  It depends on which nanny has her for the day whether or not she has the dot.  For her, it is a red marker.

My daughter takes Chinese dance lessons from an instructor who danced professionally in China.  For a Chinese New Year celebration, she had all the mamas put a red lipstick dot on the girls forehead as part of the festivities.  She said it was very traditional.  Don't know if that helps any?

It's sort of a beauty mark, not unlike the little dot that Mae West would put on the side of her cheek.  It just is supposed to mean that your kid is sweet, cute and beloved.

Hi
My daughter adopted in JiangXi province 6 years ago had a red dot on her forehead (or should I say between her eyebrows?) on the day we met.
We were very surprized by this and connected it to religion, India, Hindu... etc.
Our guide explained that this was rather common as seen in paintings of two lucky children dressed in red with money and perhaps fish.
She said her own mother had often put a red dot on her forehead on special occacion as she was such a pretty girl.
She also said, that our girl was probably much loved by her fostermother who was using the red dot to communicate how special and loved our litle girl is.

We do sometimes go through our photos and souvenirs from China. Then we also talk about her fostermom and I put a red dot on my daughters forehead and tell her how much her fostermom loved her and still does.

My daughters referral picture had the dot on her forehead, although in those days we got a copy of a copy and not in color so was not sure if it was a birthmark or not.  It wasnt until we recieved her passport that showed the same picture in color did we see that it was the red dot.
