Kool-Aid Hair Dye
When I was little we’d use Kool-Aid on our hair and we’d have vibrant pink hair for about two weeks before it came out. But, my hair was not black when I was little.
Has anyone tried this on black hair? Does it show up? I don’t want to try it and have it not work, but if it will work then GlitterGirl will get a kick out of it. I’m guessing it will be more of a tint than a color on dark hair, and we have enough time for it to wash out before school starts.
If I’m going to put color on mine I thought we could do something fun with hers as well.

This link seems to suggest it wouldn’t work without bleaching first.

Well, my best friend in high school got a purple hair gloss on her (Asian) hair and it gave off a definite purple sheen, but probably not quite as vivid as you’re hoping.
But, hey! while you’re at it, could you share the method? Do you make the kool aid by the regular recipe? or add less water? or what?
FUN!

You mix a couple of packets of Kool-Aid into enough conditioner to coat your hair well, then put plastic wrap around it for a few hours. Put vaseline on your face around your hair or it will stain the skin, too.
I should probably do some googling to see if it does anything at all on dark hair.

After doing some googling…
It is very, very, important that you use the unsweetened Kool Aid.
There are pictures out there of people with dark hair who have done it, and it’s more of a tint than a color. Apparently it shows up better in the sun. The ones that showed up seemed to be Grape and Red.
But, for dark hair most of them left it on 14 or so hours. No way will GlitterGirl keep something on her head that long.
Still, it’s cheap, so we might try it.

Hairdresser here.
You may get a hue from purple and red as hegemom says…some Asian hair is darker than others…if her hair is a blue black and shiny there will be little result. Either way it will not the vibrant color you’re hoping for. It typically takes a chemical type product on really dark hair to see a result. Actually, on Asian hair it is difficult to get a semipermanent (washes out in a few days or weeks) even in a salon to be vibrant like you are probably hoping for.
I’ll check back here later to see if you found anything…maybe someone out there has figured out a non-chemical way and that would be great to know…
Some drug stores and sally’s beauty supply carry hair paint/mascara/hair waxes etc. I realize though that’s not what you’re hoping for.

you posted the same time RQ!
Yes, red and purple are the best bet!
If you do chunks instead of her whole head you could wrap the chunks in saran wrap, secure it with rubber bands…put and old sheet and pillow case on her bed and let her sleep with it in…

For a special occasion last year we used the hot pink hairspray stuff and that worked well. But it’s just for the day and then you wash it out that night.
And honestly, I was just wanting something fun for her, if it’s not vibrant that’s okay, as long as it shows up a little bit.
Her hair is dark black and very shiny though. So, maybe it won’t work.

Hmmm, chunks are a good idea, since they would contrast with themselves and it would show up better.
I’ve never done that sort of thing, how big should the chunks be?
A piece of hair as big around as my thumb? Bigger? Smaller?

The key to getting color to ’stick’ or continue to deposit is keeping it ‘wet/damp’. Too wet then color can not get into the hair shaft…once it dries out it quits working period…no use leaving it on. So the saran wrap and tying it up with rubber bands will help to keep it damp…you may try doing it 2 nights in a row if she would put up with that…
Personally, I would try it. Worse case scenerio - go buy spray or something the next day

size of chunks is a preference. I would say at least the size of your thumb but probably double…b/c the result will be minimal you will need bigger chunks to see the results.
If someone reading this has a lighter color of hair - the size of the thumb chunks would be about right most likely unless you were going bold and beautiful:o)

thinking again…
it depends on the thickness of her hair. If her hair is still pretty fine thumb size may be about right
