Hair Texture

GlitterGirl has shiny hair. I mean, not just shiny, but glossy. When the sun shines on it, it’s like shining on oil or water, it almost glows. When she is under florescent lights it looks  a little blue the way it reflects the light. When it swings around her shoulders it almost glitters it’s so shiny.

When we brought TwinkleToes home her hair was dull and lifeless and I assumed that was a product of her malnutrition. But now, over a year later, it’s grown about two inches and the new growth looks pretty much the same as the old growth. It’s not lifeless anymore, but that is probably more about the products we use on it than anything else. But the fact remains that she has matte blackish-brownish hair that is obviously not as shiny and healthy looking as her sister’s hair.

I wonder if this is just a product of them having different hair textures, or if TwinkleToes’ hair is still not recovered from her years of malnutrition. Her nails grow like wildfire and have to be clipped every second or third day, but her hair doesn’t grow very fast and what has grown in is not healthy and shiny looking.

They both get plenty of protein and good fats in their diet, and they both eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Nutrition-wise I know they are fine, but when we are outside on a sunny day the difference in their hair textures is very noticeable. Even by strangers.

Thank you for writing. I love reading your posts about how you look at the world.

I wonder how fast hair grows….maybe it will take two to three years to see a change in the quality of her hair.

I grow my hair for Locks of Love and it takes FOREVER for it to grow long enough.

I have been growing my hair since my LID date…..March 2006, and I have grown about 10 inches. It takes awhile to grow.

I would be curious to see her hair after 3 years……

    RQ,
My daughters are the same way! My older girl has beautiful, brown-black hair that looks so pretty when it’s brushed and just washed while my younger daughter, adopted just a year ago, has what I would call courser, non-shiny hair as well. She was almost a year older than her sister when we adopted her, so we have the same situation – underfed then, but eating well now.

My daughter’s hair was very dull also when we brought her home. It stayed that way for about two years or so, until she was 3 or 3 1/2. Now, she is 5 and she has beautiful glossy hair. It looks so healthy it is amazing it is the same hair. She was very malnourished so I think it just took that long to recover from it. Also, she developed issues with constipation at age 2, so we started giving her flax oil every day to keep everything lubricated, so to speak. I think that might have given her hair some of its shine. She would have one tsp. 3x a day. She loved the taste of it. Her hair is still very thin, and you can see how it is growing in in some areas. We have kept it in a short bob, and it looks great!

I read somewhere that flax oil also helps brain development. I nice bonus! Too bad it doesn’t work on my old brain.
